700 PUPILS
AT PHEIIX
PHENIX CITY, Ala. — Class
room space is now available for
700 pupils at the Mother Mary
Mission conducted by the Sal-
vatorian Fathers in the poverty-
stricken Negro quarter of this
once-notorious community.
Capacity of the mission edu
cational facilities was increased
by 300 pupils through completion
of a new high school building,
started in 1955. Dedication of the
schoolhouse took place Oct. 14
with Archbishop Thomas J. Tool-
en, D. D., of Mobile-Birmingham,
officiating.
Construction of the new build
ing was under direction of the
Very Rev; Paul Schuster, S.D.S.,
provincial of the American Pro
vince of the Society of the Divine
Savior, and the Rev. Gregory
Putzer, S.D.S., pastor of the mis
sion.
Modern in architecture and
equipment, the high school has
seven classrooms, a fully-equip
ped chemistry laboratory, typing
and band rooms, and a combina
tion gymnasium, lunchroom and
auditor ium. The elementary
school has 10 classrooms.
Enrollment in the two schools
shows 465 pupils attending class
es, _ 342 in the grade school and
123* in high school. Of the total
only 71 are Catholic children.
The faculty consists of 10 Sisters,
five priests, all Salvatorians, and
two lay teachers, a man and a
woman, the former a graduate
of Mother Mary Mission and
Xavier University at New Or
leans, La.
When first started in Septem
ber, 1941, enrollment on opening
day was 67 pupils. By October
97 children, were attending class
es and growth has been steady
ever since.
Apart from the school, the mis
sion flourished in its work among
the Negroes since the Society
of the Divine Savior took charge
in July, 1941. In October of this
year, it recorded its 283rd baptism,
and records also 38 marriages
and 152 confirmations over the
15-year span.
•Other activities include weekly
medical and dental clinics, semi
weekly clothing distribution and
church societies, including Holy
Name, Christian Mothers Associ
ation, Catholic Laymen’s Society
and Sodalities.
The mother mission has also
expanded to Columbus, Georgia,
where from 20 to 30 persons now
attend Masses on Sundays.

Mothers Meet
VALDOSTA, GA.—'The regular
monthly meeting of the St. John’s
Mothers’ Club was held Tuesday,
Oct. 30, at the school.
The meeting was opened with
a prayer by Father Marvin J.
Le Frois. The elected officers for
the coming year are as follows:
Mrs. Julian Ashley, president;
Mrs. Ray Corbett, vice-president;
Mrs. H. Q. Waggoner, treasurer;
Mrs. William Dennis, secretary.
The'president presided over the
meeting and old and new business
was discussed. The new consti
tution and by-laws were read and
approved. A report was given
on the Halloween carnival.
After the meeting was adjourn
ed an entertainment program was
presented by the kindergarten
class under the direction of Sister
Mary Cecil. Refreshments were
served by the kindergarten
mothers.
