ARCHBISHOP
DEAD AT 71
BROOKLYN, N. Y., —Solemn
Requiem Mass for Archbishop
Thomas Edmund Molloy, 71, who
for' 35 years was the spiritual
leader of the Catholics in the Di
ocese of Brooklyn, was offered
in St. Joseph’s Church here.
The- third Bishop of Brooklyn
died (November 26) at his resi
dence here. He had been ill seri
ously since November 15 when
he was stricken with pneumonia
and suffered -a stroke.
Here in this second most popu
lous Catholic See in the nation—
only the Archdiocese of Chicago
has a larger' Catholic population
than the Diocese of Brooklyn—
Archbishop Molly was noted as
a scholar and orator, beloved as
an administrator and respected as
a leader by persons of all faith.
One of Archbishop Molly’s
dearest projects was convert
work. Under his guidance, the
Apostolate for the Instruction of
Non-Catholics was established
and muchroomed into 50 centers
of instructions. Over the years,
it was his custom to confirm large
classes of converts who had re
ceived instructions at these cen
ters at a special annual ceremony.
Archbishop Molly was a native
of Nashua, N. H., and attended
St. Anselm’s College at Manches
ter, N. H. He came to Brooklyn
in 1903 and completed his college
studies at St. Francis’ College.
Deciding to study for the
priesthood, he entered St. John’s
Seminary, Brooklyn, and after a
year he was sent to the North
American College in Rome, where
he completed his studies. He was
ordained in Rome on September
19, 1908.
H i s first assignment in the
Brooklyn diocese was as a curate
at St. John’s Chapel, which now
is Queen of All Saints’ Church.
The pastor was Msgr. George
Mundelein, who alter became
Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn,
then Archbishop of Chicago and
was created a Cardinal. Father
Molloy served as secretary to
Cardinal Mundelein when he was
Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn
and accompanied him as his sec
retary for a short period when
the prelate moved to Chicago.
Pope Benedict XV named him-
auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn on
July 28, 1920 and he was con
secrated on October 3 of that
year. On November 21, 1921, he
was named Bishop of Brooklyn
upon the death of Bishop Charles
E. McDonnell, and was installed
on February 15, 1922.
His Holiness Pope Pius XII
honored him for his work in the
Brooklyn Diocese by bestowing
the personal title of Archbishop
upon him on April 7, 1951.
