City Is Not
Caring For Teen
Gang Problem
CHICAGO, (NC) — “Teen-age
gangs are rougher and tougher
today than ever before,” but the
city of Chicago has done little to
cope with the problem, a priest
said here.
Father Ralph Gallagher, S.J..,
professor of sociology at Loyola
University, stated that Chicago
“has allotted only a few thousand
dollars to start a youth program,
in comparison to over three mil
lion dollars voted by the city of
New York for the same purpose.”
The teen-age problem includes
girls, he continued, and it can be
attributed to the complacency of
parents and other citizens, plus an
almost complete lack of discipline
among youth.
Father Gallagher, a frequent
lecturer as special'police depart
ment classes, said rough gangs
have been formed because “we
force teen-agers to go into dives
when they are unable to find any
where else to go.”
He suggested that city schools
be kept open in the evenings so
that supervised teen-age activities
could be conducted in them. He
criticized youth organizations that
do little but “function for pub
licity’s sake.”
‘What we need,” he concluded,
“is one good organization, not the
many groups that have been form
ed such as the mayor’s youth
committee, the sheriff’s youth
committee and others.”
HUNGARIAN
REFUGEES

ical studies.
Among the refugees here were
young couple who became en
gaged on the day the revolt broke
out in Hungary. They are Marta
Csapc, 17, and Gyula Hamori, 20.
Arriving with them were Mar
ta’s 18-year-old sister, Julianna,
with her fiance Joszef Simon, 20.
Julianna and Joszef have left for
Buffalo, N. Y., where CRS-NCWC
has arranged for their welfare.
Marta and Gyula both worked
in the same textile factory and
have known each other for a
year.
“We escaped,” Marta said, “by
riding in a friend’s truck. He had
permission to travel around the
country to bring market supplies
to Budapest. ”^e were stopped
about 15 times by Russian and
Hungarian security police, but
they found our credentials valid
and permitted us to go on. We
kept riding right acorss the bor
der.”
Both of the sisters’ fiances took
an active part in the fighting in
Budapest and the girls helped
by carrying messages.
Marta Csapo and Gyula Hamo
ri will stay at the home of his
uncle, Frank Purgay, in Cleve
land, Ohio. They expect to be
married as soon as they are able
to do so.
