years ago, His Eminence Alfredo
Cardinal Ottaviani, Pro-Secretary
of the Sacred Congregation of
of the Holy Office, said in St.
Peter’s Basilica,
Cardinal Ottaviani spoke to a
crowd of more than-40,000 faithful
gathered in the Basilica at a Holy
Hour for Hungary and for world
peace.
“Hungary gives more reason
for weeping,” said the Cardinal,
“than Jeremias ever had over the
invasion of Jerusalem.”
Many men claim to be promot
ers ol justice, he went on, but
few are honestly working toward
that goal.
“The aggressor sits as a judge
among other judges in what
should be the supreme, assembly
of justice in the world,” declared
the prelate, “and the victim is
represented by the aggressor’s ac
complice.”
The Cardinal asked: “Does not
the rest of the world have its
part of the responsibility when it
pretends, with cynical calculation,
to be powerful and to act in the
name of prudence? What will the
world do to raise itself to the
moral height of those who are
dying to keep their faith and not
betray the freedom of the sons of
God?”
He expressed his gratitude that,
while there have been so many
who have hesitated to speak and
act, the Vicar of Christ “has ut
tered in the name of God words
of condemantion which will ring
throughout history as expressions
of contempt for the oppressors
and to the glory of the Church
which proclaims the sacred and
human rights of man, who was
red eemed and liberated by
Christ.”
The Hungarian people - have
shown the whole world the hor
rible things that can happen un
der the “bloody oppression of
communism,” the Cardinal said.
“But woe to us if, after such a
clear and tremendous testimony
offered in blood, we choose to re
main cowards and sinners.”
“The Hungarian people are be
ing crucified today and are ex
piating our sins,” he continued.
“May God’s mercy save this gen
erous people who have so often
saved Christian people with their
own blood. May God’s mercy hold
back His wrath and save the
peace of the world. May He give
all in exile a return to their
homeland. May He dry the tears
of so many mothers. May He hear
the pleading cries of so many
orphans.”
Cardinal Ottaviani ascended a
portable pulpit in the Vatican
Basilica several times during the
Holy Hour to deliver the various
parts of his sermon.
At each interval there were
hymns and prayers for the Hun
garian people and for peace.
The last time he ascended tha
pulpit, the Cardinal recited tha
folowing prayer:
“O Jesus, Lord of our souls,
have pity on those who are dying,
on those who are suffering and
are giving their lives for the glory
of Your Name. Raise this ad
mirable people to glory, a people
trampled upon by its enemies.
“We are all Hungarians today,
or so we would like to be in your
presence, O Lord. They represent
us on the cross as You did. They
are our witnesses: they are our
martyrs. We thank You for giving
us such a great, courageous
Christian people amidst so much
cowardice. If such. greatness is
still possible, You have not died
in vain and our hopes will once
more become certainties. We can
not despair after having seen how
Your enemies are faced, after
having seen how people are fight
ing to free the Church from op
pressing murderers and' anti-
Christs, after having seen how
men are dying for love of You and
Your glory, O Christ.”
At the conclusion of the Holy
Hour, H i s Eminence Benedetto
Cardinal Alois! Masella, Prefect
of the Sacred Congregation of the
Sacraments, i m parted Benedic
tion of the Blessed Sacrament.
Tire crowd leaving the Basilica
shouted their homage to His Hol
iness Pope Pius XII, who came
to the window of his study and
imparted his blessing.
