Silent Parades,
Pray For Hungary
FATIMA, Portugal, (NC) —
Twenty Bishops led a crowd of
more than 100,000 Catholics from
all parts of Portugal to the Shrine
of Our Lady of Fatima here to
pray for the victims of commun
ist oppression in Hungary.
His Eminence Manuel Cardinal
Goncalves Cerejeira, Patriarch of
| Lisbon, who called for the special
pilgrimage of prayer and penance,
celebrated the Mass at the shrine.
During the ceremonies airplanes
| flew low aver the crowd and
j dropped flowers, and papers print-
| ed in the colors of the Hungarian
j national flag.
All over Portugal organizations
|—both Catholic ,and non-Catholic
j —have registered protests against
j Soviet oppression of the Hungari-
j an people.'
The Catholic 'University League
said it' would back the Portuguese
government in any international
action it might take. The League
said it would cooperate in offer
ing ‘hospitality to refugees and in
providing clothing and money.
Caritas, the Catholic charity
organization in Portugal, has sent
several airplane loads of food,
medicines and clothing for the
Hungarian victims.
Six thousand workers from the
big textile mills at Riba de Ave
near Oporto demonstrated their
solidarity with the Hungari
an workers by marching to the
parish Church where they attend
ed a Mass celebrated outside the
main door.
The Portuguese Catholic Wo
men’s League, in union with the
International League of Catholic
Women's Organizations, asked ev
ery woman in Portugal to mark
the feast day of St. Elizabeth of
Hungary with special prayers.
In Lisbon, on the eve of the
feast, crowds walked in a silent
procession of prayer for Hungary
to the church of Our Lady of
Penha de Franca.
In Ponte Delgada, Azores, stu
dents were joined by the whole
population of the town in a silent
march of protest through the
streets. The previous night the
students had maintained a vigil
of intercession in the parish
church.
The man with a hot temper
should keep it in a cool place,
tightly corked.
THE TRUTH
Thousands of pennies may make
a fortune, but no amount of small
talk adds up tp wisdom.
