THE BULLETIN OF THE CATHOLIC LAYMEN’S ASSOCIATION OF GEORGIA
MARCH 2, 1957.
Archbishop Welcomes Bishop McDonough
12th February, 1957
His Excellency,
Most Reverend Thomas J. Mc
Donough,
Auxiliary Bishop of Savannah,
Savannah, Georgia.
“Your Excellency:
“It is with joy that I join with
all the priests, religious and Taity
of the Diocese of Savannah in
welcoming you as its new Auxil
iary Bishop. We thank Our Holy
Father for His goodness in giving
to the diocese so good a Bishop,
noted for his unusual qualities of
mind and heart and possessing
an ecclesiastical training and cul
ture that fit him admirably for
the new work that has been as-

Georgia being so close to Flori
da, where for so many years both
as priest and Auxiliary Bishop
you served Archbishop Hurley
and his priests and people so
ably, zealous and kindly, we
were able to observe as it were
at close hand the success of your
work in our neighboring state.
Quite obviously, God has blessed
your work there and He will
continue to give you all the grac
es you wall need for your tasks in
Georgia.
Your Excellency comes to a
diocese in which the priests, re
ligious and laity will give you
that wholehearted cooperation
that you will need in order to
achieve in Georgia the same
brilliant success that marked
your work in the great state of
Florida. You will find that our
priests, religious and laity are
second to none in the depth and
tenderness of their Catholic faith, j
in the goodness of their lives, in
their attachment to the Church,
in their docility to the teachings
of the Church and in their de
votion to ecclesiastical authority.
You have come to a diocese that
for many years has had the con
solation of seeing hundreds of our
beloved non - Catholic bretheren
embrace the Catholic faith each
year, to become models of true
Christian living. You have come
to a state in -which you will find
all the people, Catholic'and non-
Catholic alike, friendly and well
disposed. You have come to a
state in which very happy re
lations exist between Catholics
and non-Catholics and also with
the civil authorities throughout
the diocese. You will find that
editors and reporters of the secu
lar press have manifested a very
consoling and sympathetic in
terest in Catholic events and are
generous in describing such
events with a generosity that
Catholics in many other parts of
our country might well envy.
You will get to know the
Catholic Laymen’s Association of
Georgia which for the past forty
and more years has been a source
of constant consolation to the
bishops and the priests in their
labors for souls in this state.
Your excellency will find a
splendid organized and function
ing Diocesean Council of Catholic
Women who are worthy of all
praise for the outstanding role
that they have played in the field
of Catholic Action and especially
in upholding the sanctity of the
Christian home and being cham
pions of our Catholic schools. In
your work you will be edified by
what the Legion of Mary and oth
er parochial and interparochial
associations are doing for the
Church in the diocese, including
flourishing Sodalities of Our
Lady, Holy Name Societies, Con
ference of St. Vincent de Paul,
Newman Clubs, Catholic Youth
Organizations and others.
In a word, Your Excellency will
have the constant support of all
the Diocese and I know full well
that it will not be long before
your goodness and your heart of
charity, your administrative skill
and all your other superb quali
ties of mind and soul will win
all hearts.
Let me say once again how
distressed I am that circumstanc
es over which I have no control
compel me to forego the pleasure
and honor of being present when
you are officially installed in
your new office. At the same
time it affords me unbounded
pleasure to know that His Ex-
