ASK POAU
'GIFTS' FROM
ADVERTISERS
RICHMOND, Va„—The Cath
olic Virginian, newspaper of the
Richmond diocese, said that it
has discovered that a Methodist
minister has written letters to
its advertisers criticizing the
Church and asking for contri
butions to an anti-Catholic or
ganization.
The paper said in an article
that the Rev. Fred B. Wyand, Jr,,
pastor of a Methodist Church in
the small southwestern Virginia
community of Whitmell and a
new subscriber to the publication,
wrote the letters.
Mr. Wyand asks for gifts to the
organization known as Protest
ants and Other Americans Unit
ed for Separation of Church and
State (POAU) an ant i-Catholic
group which describes itself as
being “devoted to the cause of
separation of church and state.”
"Your support of a Catholic
paper makes me feel that you
would be equally eager to con
tribute to such a cause as that
represented by the POAU,” Mr.
Wyand said in his letter sent each
advertiser.
John J. Daly, editor and general
manager of the Catholic Virgini
an, answered Mr. Wyand’s accu
sations in a front-page article in
the paper.
Mr. Wyand’s letter began with
the statement that the Reform
ation started when Martin Luther
“became sick of the impossible
teachings” of the Catholic Church.
Included with the letter was a
pamphlet stating that contribu
tions to the POAU would among
other things, “help counter the
threat of clericalism which has
cursed Europe and Latin Ameri
ca,” “will help defeat the effort
of the Roman Catholic hierarchy,
or any church, to obtain funds
for its schools, churches, orphan
ages, or other operations,” and
“will help keep our country free
and strong.”
Mr. Daly replied to Mr. Wy
and’s letter point to point. In ad
dition, he stated:
“Most of the Catholic Virgini
an’s advertisers are non-Catho-
lics. They give no gifts to our
diocesan newspaper, nor are
they ever solicited for any. They
buy white space in the hope
their investment will bring in a
profitable return from CV read
ers, Numerous instances can be
cited to indicate that their ads
not only have brought increased
business but have merited the
good will of our people as well.”
The editor said firms and pro
ducts are thoroughly screened by
the paper, and that it recom
mends “our advertisers and their
wares.” He expressed the hope
that Mr. Wyand’s letter will
prompt our readers to give fur
ther convincing evidence of the
value of the Catholic Virginian
as an advertising medium.”
