ROME, — His Holiness Pope
Pius XII has condemned evils
that are leading the world “head
long to its own destruction,” and
called for “the Christian renewal
of society.”
The Ploly Father spoke out
sharply against greed for money,
the cult of the body and an ex
aggerated pursuit of comfort. He
said the world is held in the grip
of a terrible temptation to ma
terialism.”
His Holiness spoke in an En-
cynical Letter addressed to the
Cardinals, Archbishops and Bish
ops of France. The letter hailed
the celebrations that will mark
the centennial, in 1958, of the
apparitions of the Blessed Virgin
at Lourdes.
The Blessed Mother has given
“a cry of alarm” for this present
day world that would “gain the
universe at the price of its soul,”
the Holy Father said.
Her message to the world, he
added, is “Penance, penance,
penance.”
Pope Pius called “all the faith
ful,” and especially priests, to
help in the reinvigiration of the
world by prayer and penance.
Our Lady of Lourdes’ message
of penance has become increas
ingly more important in a world
which, for all its pride and se
curity, seems unaware of the
evils which undermine it under
cover of passing prosperity, the
Holy Father said.
The encyclical, entitled “Le
Pelerinage de Lourdes” (The
Loux-des Pilgrimage) from the
first three words of the letter,
written in French, commemorat
ed the centenary of the appai'i-
tions of the Blessed Virgin to
Bernadette Soubirous at the grot
to of Massabielle in France.
The letter expressed hope that
the jubilee year, from February
11, 1958, to February 11, 1959,
will be a period of renewed de
votion to her “who, according to
