VATICAN MOVES VIGIL FAST
FROM FEAST OF ASSUMPTION
TO IMMACULATE CONCEPTION
(Radio, N.C.W.C. News Service)
VATICAN CITY — The fast
and abstinence on the vigil of the
Assumption has been transferred
to the vigil of the Immaculate
Conception.
The change is a permanent one.
A decree setting it forth was is
sued July 25 by the Sacred Con
gregation of the Council. It was
signed by His Eminence Pietro
Cardinal Ciriaci, Prefect of the
Sacred Congregation of the. Coun
cil, and Msgr. Francesco Roberti,
secretary.
The change in regulations was
made, according to the decree,
because “many ordinaries of va
rious nations have called the at
tention of the Apostolic See to
the many difficulties which, be
cause of circumstances of time
and place, run contrary to com
plete observance of the law of
fast and abstinence established
for the vigil of the Assumption.”
The feast of the Assumption of
the Blessed Virgin Mary is cele
brated on August 15. which this
year falls on a Thursday. De
cember 8 is the day on which the
feast of the Immaculate Con
ception is observed.
This year the latter feast falls
on a Sunday, thus the day of
fast and abstinence from meat
will be Saturday, December 7.
The decree affects Catholics
throughout the world. Until now,
the three vigils during the litur
gical year which were observed
by fast and abstinence were those
of Pentecost, the Assumption and
Christmas. The decree now
changes the vigil observances to
Pentecost, the Immaculate Con-
eption and Christmas. The vi
gil of Easter under the Holy
Week regulations which went
into effect last year, is now a
normal lenten day of fast and
partial abstinence.
