WORK OF NUNS IN ADMINISTRATIVE
POSTS CONSISTENT WITH RELIGIOUS
LIFE, HOSPITAL OFFICIAL DECLARES
(N.C.W.C. News Service)
CINCINNATI.—The work of
nuns saddled with administrative
jobs such as running a hospital
or orphanage is consistent with
religious life, Jesuit Father John
J. Flanagan, executive director
of the Catholic Hospital Associa
tion, emphasized here.
Father Flanagan said to con
clude that such administrators
are “not as truly religious as the
teacher or the nurse” is “most
erroneous.” He spoke at the fifth
Conference on Business Problems
©f Catholic Institutions sponsored
by Xavier University. Nearly 100
officials of institutions in 19
states — mostly nuns — took part
in the three-day program.
The work of administrators is
“a necessary part of the apostolic
mission of any religious- institu
tion, of any religious order and
of the Church itself,” Father
Flanagan declared.
“Administration is to be frown
ed upon only when it is poorly
done—when it is not as Catholic,
not as efficient and progressive
as other phases of the work of a
religious group,” Father Flanagan
said.
He explained that “old-fash
ioned techniques” are not “more
Catholic” and that “archaic pro
cedures do not connote virtue.”
He urged institution officials to

“incorporate modern administra
tive devices and techniques into
the apostolic objective of our
Catholic institutions.” He stres
sed: “We should be as modern
and up-to-date as our particular
type of organization demands.”
Father Flanagan declared the
highest priority in modernizing
administration techniques should
be in the “area of accounting.”
He said that “we sometimes at
tempt to manage large institu-
ions with millions of dollars in
volved, and fail to make use of
good accounting techniques.”
There should be up-to-date pro
cedure in purchasing, Father
Flanagan said. He emphasized
that there is a “heavy responsi
bility” in that field which only
“a trained Religious or lay per
son can handle.” He said that
the personal field is “completely
new and unexplored for most
of us.”
“Administrators and superiors
have a moral obligation to han
dle personnel problems in the
most efficient and just way pos
sible,” Father Flanagan said.
“Well managed institutions pro
tect the assets of our religious
orders.”
When institutions are well
managed, more funds are made
available for charity and mission
ary work, Father Flanagan said.
Such institutions “reflect the
right order and peace of soul
which should characterize the re
ligious life,” Father Flanagan
said, and “they manifest to stu
dents, patients and the public
that Catholics can be business
like and also good Religious.”
