For his outstanding contribu

and his war-relief work, the Rev.
Clougherty received the Order

est honor awarded a foreigner,
from Generalissimo Chiang Kai-
shek. The Victory Medal for out

honorific t i 11 e of “Chung-Jen”
(Loyal Person) were also award
ed to the American Benedictine
missionary by the Nationalist
government of China.
In 1920, after his ordination at
Mt. St. Mary’s Seminary in Em-
mitsburg, Md., the Rev. Clough
erty left for China to succeed
Archabbot Aurelius Stehle, O.S.
B., as chancellor of Catholic Uni

he attained the distinction of be

a cleanship in a Chinese govern

Father Clougherty was dean of
the Western Literature Depart
ment of Honan University. For
seven years he was chairman of
the International Relief Commit

At St. Procopius College, Fa
ther Clougherty will devote his
time to help attain one of the
most needed additions to the
college campus — an up-to-date
$775,000 library for the use of
students and faculty members.
