SISTER CALLS ON HOSPITALS
TO GIVE MORE SECURITY TO
THEIR LAY STAFF REISERS
CLEVELAND. (NO —A Holy
Cross ,Sister, told delegates to the
42nd contention of the Catholic
Hospital Association of the U. S.
and Canada that .Religious must
give greater security to the lay
employees of their hospitals.
-Sister. Miriam Dolores of Holy
Cross Central School of Nursing,
Anderson, Ind.. spoke of the
“danger” of underestimating the
value and positions of the lay
worker in an institution whose
key positions are held by the Re
ligious who own it.
“Many loyal and devoted lay
members of our hospital staff
have been disturbed by the un
certainty they have about their
tenure of office,” she said. “As
each annual assignment of Sis
ters takes place, the lay staff face
the possibility of relinquishing'
their posts to newly appointed
Sisters.”
“There needs to be: some meas
ure of security given to these per
sons if we expect them to assist
us in the difficult and key po
sitions in nursing,” she added.
Speaking on the topic, “How
Good Is Our Nursing Service?”
Sister Miriam Dolores put em
phasis. on the large numbers of
non-professional aides that hos
pitals are using to fill nursing
needs on their staffs. She declar
ed that the outcome “has been a
group who have been assigned
to more direct bedside care than
their better trained nurse mem
bers.” Formerly, Sister said, a
patient was cared for by one
nurse whom he could term ‘my
nurse’ because of the length of
time she was with him and the
number of things she did for him.
Now there are 20 or more per
sons each giving a segment of
care, she added.
The more experience a man has
in making' good resolutions the
poorer the quality.
Advice can always be had for
nothing and that’s usually just
about what it’s worth.
