"MECHANICAL" NURSING IMPERILS
HUMAN LIFE, PRIEST-EDUCATOR WARNS
(N.C.W.C News Service)
CLEVELAND, — A “by-the-
numbers” approach to the nurs
ing profession poses a threat to
human life, a priest-educator
told a Catholic nursing group
here.
The warning about a mechanic
al technique in nursing was is
sued by Father John J. Flana
gan, S.J., CHA executive director
at the 10th anniversary meeting
of the Conference of Catholic
Schools of Nursing. The meeting
was held in conjunction with the
42nd annual convention of the
Catholic Hospital Association of
the U. S. and Canada (CHA),
which drew over 5,000 delegates.
Father Flanagan scored the
“nine-to-five” attitude in nurs
ing care and the rigid adherence
to narrowly assigned duties in
hospitals at the expense of other
services required by patients.
Even a back rub, he said, can be
a therapeutic measure.
“Where human lives are at
stake, ,we cannot surrender to the
common weaknesses of the mar
ketplace,” he stated.
He told supervisors of nursing
schools that they “must accept
responsibility for better organi
sation and establishment of a
discipline which will not ignore
mistakes and lack of courtesy
and personal attention.”
Although expressing the belief
that nurses are better educated
today, he warned against the
peril inherent in mechanical
nursing care.
“Many of our young nurses are
lacking in a personal dedication
to patients,” he said. “Too many
do not display the sense of re
sponsibility which is so import
ant in patient care. Too many do
not manifest a love for their pa
tients, which means so much to
sick people.”
He blamed this attitude on a
“social and moral trend which
has affected our whole national
pattern of living.”
“Can we l o n g tolerate this
trend in ah area of service which
affects the comfort and cure of
patients and even places human

lives in jeopardy?” he asked.
Father Flanagan pointed out
that Catholic schools of nursing
in this country are well ahead of
the national average in making
improvements leading to ac
creditation by the National
League of Nursing. He praised
nursing school directors for their
sacifices to improve educational
facilities and programs in nurs
ing.
In a CHA session on standards
of care for newborn infants, Dr.
Joseph Christian of Chicago said
the reduction of the mortality
rate in these infants presents the
greatest challenge confronting
medical and nursing personnel
caring for them.
In urban areas more than 95
per cent of births occur in hos
pitals, he stated, but “in spite of
a decreasing over-all death rate,
a relatively large number will
die during the immediate neo
natal period.”
“Over 50 per cent of the deaths
of this group occur during the
first week, of life,” he declared.
He urged that these facts
should not be regarded as an
other annoying statistic, but as
“an alerting signal for all of us
to make a joint effort to re
evaluate the care of the new
born infant.”
