many occasions. They said that be
cause of this, and because of the
fact that the New Orleans group
had combined doctrinal error with
a violation of courtesy and proper
procedure—by appealing directly
to the Pope instead of to the Sac
red Congregation of the Council,
by going over the head of their i
Archbishop and by making the
appeal pdblic—any major pro
nouncement would tend to dignity
an undeserving petition.
But it was learned that no Vat

officially on the appeal and that

It was pointed out that when
the Jesuit Bend incident occurred
in the New Orleans archdiocese
in 1955, the Vatican City daily,
L’Osservatore Romano, praised
the attitude of Archbishop Hum
mel.
(Parishioners of St. Cecilia’s
Mission Church in Jesuit Bend,
La., refused to accept a Negro
priest who had been sent as a
replacement. Archbishop Rummel
ordered the church closed until
the members of the parish modi
fied their sentiments.)
Although L’Osservatore has no
official status, it is commonly ac
cepted that it reflects the general
-current of opinion in Vatican City
circles.
The Pope’s radio address to the
National Conference of Catholic
Charities held in New Orleans in
1947 is recalled here. Although
the Pope’s words were not direct
ed particularly to the question of
integration, it was pointed out
that they pertained to the present
question in their general appli
cation.
At that time, the Pope said:
“You will love one another,
Christ said, as I have loved you
. . . ‘not as men love each other,’
says St. Augustine, ‘simply be
cause they are fellows of the
same human race; but as they
love, who know and profess that
all men are kin to God, sons of
the Most High, in whom must be
formed and perfected a brother
likeness to the Only Begotten
Son.’ . . .
“We would wish to see all
young men of head and heart
united in some work of Christian
charity ... It would help power
fully to remedy the evils of social
and racial inequalities.”
