BOOK REVIEWS
(Continued from Page 13)
Patrick, known to the Indians as
“Broken Hand,” crossed the
Rocky Mountains with Colonel
Fremont. Their close friendship
endured through all the hardships
they experienced together. This
biography of a great but little
known hero will interest girls and
boys, ages 10 to 15, and will help
them know more about this phase
in our country’s history—Sandra
Morris.
RED HUGH, PRINCE OF
DONEGAL, by Robert T. Reilly,
is an adventure story set in Ire
land in the late 1500s. when Ire
land was at war with England.
The adventurous young prince,
skilled in the arts of war, is in
vited to a five-day fair. He ac
cepts the invitation and leaves
Donegal for the long journey.
After enjoying the fair, he is
tricked by an English merchant
and taken to Birmingham Tower
in Dublin. He spends three years
in the Tower, carefully planning
an escape. With two friends, he
finally succeeds in escaping and
hastens back to Donegal, arriving
just in time to join in a battle
with the English who are trying
to take Donegal Castle. The Irish
win the battle and Red Hugh is
reunited with his parents and
friends. Mr. Reilly’s story of this
bold prince is written for ages 10
to 14. Its background is colorful
and authentic. The illustrations
by Gringhuis are realistic.—
Stephen J. Kasmerski.
THE BISHOP'S BOY, by Floyd
Anderson, is an enjoyable story.
Marty O’Regan, an adventurous
Catholic boy, assisted two priests,
one of whom was Bishop John
Carroll of Baltimore. On an er
rand for Bishop Carroll, Marty
was befriended by a robber and
both were shanghaied aboard a
ship. The only place where Cath
olics could escape prison or per
secution was in Maryland. This
book combines history with ad
venture.—Billie Gaddy.
WIRES WEST, by L. V. Jacks,
an interesting book for teen-agers,
describes the stringing of the first
telegraph line across America’s
western plains, in the summer of
1861, from Julesburg, Colorado,
to Salt Lake City, Utah, a distance
of about 530 miles. The crew
fights snakes, heat, food shortage,
and especially time; for a rival
crew from California is trying to
reach Salt Lake City before them.
John McFadden, the outstanding
character of the book, has to fight
not only the natural dangers but
also the dislike of Zack Ray, who
attempts to murder him and
causes trouble from the first page
of the book to the last. This book
is written for sixth or seventh
graders; it combines important
historical facts with a dash of
imagination here and there.—
John Louth.
Another teen-age novel is:
THE LADY AND THE PIRATE.
by Robert Riordon (Bruce, $2.95),
a realistic story, full of suspense-
packed adventure and exciting
romance. Nicki Fleurette, a
Creole beauty of sixteen, and
Paul Delaterre, a Baratarian
pirate with Jean Lafitte’s crew,
find love and happiness in spite
of the terrible dangers of the
Battle of New Orleans. Out
standing bravery, devout faith,
bold adventure, and loving affec
tion are qualities which add up to
a fascinating tale, enjoyable from
beginning t o end.—S u z a n n e
Crowley.
“If you wish to give religious
presents to someone this year,
why not consider a picture or
statue of our Lady. Be sure that
it is a fitting representation of
the most glorious . creature of
God—no dime store models.” —
Christian Life Calendar, 1958.
