AMERICAN BACKGROUND
BOOKS, published by Kenedy,
$2.50 each:
THE FRIAR AND THE
KNIGHT, by Flora Strousse,
illustrated by William Wilson, is
a highly educational novel that
tells of Cortez’ dangerous voyage
to a new land. Here he makes
friends with, the Indians along
the coast and moves on to con
quer the Aztecs and raise the
Spanish flag over what was once
Montezuma’s kingdom. During
this harrowing time, Padre Bar-
tolome de Olmedo stays by Cortez’
side, always a loyal and true
friend; even though at times he
disagrees with the Captain and
General, especially in their treat
ment of the poor Indians. Flora
Strousse vividly portrays Cortez
and his friend Fray Bartolome in
a fine historical book for adven
ture-loving readers.—Yvette Tuc
ker.
ADVENTUROUS LADY, by
Dorothy Fremont Grant, illustrat
ed by Douglas Grant, is an excit
ing story of a courageous woman,
Margaret Brent, who played an
important role in the affairs of
colonial Maryland. During the
time that she lived in Maryland,
Margaret Brent was appointed
executrix of the estate of Gover
nor Leonard Calvert, and also
guardian of an Indian Princess.
Later Margaret stopped a mutiny
single-handed. Because she was a
Catholic, she had to seek refuge
in Virginia where she spent the
last years of her life in peace and
quiet. This is a story well worth
reading.—Elizabeth Fedack.
CATHOLIC TREASURY
BOOKS, published by Bruce,
$2.00 each:
THE MARYLANDERS, by
Anne Heagney, is a facinating
story of the growth of Catholicity
in colonial Maryland. It tells of
the struggle for freedom of wor
ship, when the Puritans who had
been sheltered in Catholic Mary
land turned against their protec
tors.. Priests were martyred; Mass
was forbidden; and Catholics
were fined heavily for professing
their faith. A secret plot to wipe
out Saint Mary’s discovered by
two boys disguised as Puritans,
leads to many adventures. But
the information about the
enemy’s plans comes too late to
protect the unarmed Catholics
from the sudden attack of the
Puritans. This is an absorbing
tale, blending history and fiction
in an intriguing plot.—Ruth
Roemer.
MARC'S CHOICE, by Sister
Mary Cornelius, S. S. N. D., is
the interesting story of a Chris
tian boy who lived in ancient
Rome during the early, days of the
Church. Marc had the distinction
of being asked by the Pope tjo
help in the underground, along
with his mother and father who
suffered martyrdom for their
Faith. Boys and girls will
thoroughly enjoy this book about
a courageous boy who was willing
to risk everything for the love of
God.—Margaret Mary Wynne.
THE ADVENTURES OF
BROKEN HAND, by Frank Mor-
riss, is an exciting story about a
man who, from the age of severi-
teen, lived in the mountains of
America’s western frontier, trying
to make peace between the white
and the red men, and to teach
them the word of God. Once he
even succeeded in bringing a
priest to them. Thomas Fitz-
