Savannah Deanery Council Holds
Quarterly Meeting At Statesboro
STATESBORO — The Savan
nah Deanery, C. C. W., held its
quarterly meeting on Sunday, De
cember 1, in Statesboro. It was
preceded by a luncheon at
Bryant’s Kitchen. A bus was
chartered for those going from
Savannah and a large crowd was
in attendance, including repre
sentatives from Brunswick and
Statesboro.
The Rev. Robert B. Rademach-
er, pastor of St. Matthew’s
Church at Statesboro, extended
a welcome on behalf of the parish
council there and Rev. Joseph
Nagele and Very Rev. John D.
Toomey, spiritual moderator,
were also present.
The following committee chair
men submitted reports; Mrs. H.
A. Stanley, Catholic Charities;
Mrs. B. C. Guild, Civil Defense;
Mrs. Katherine Huggins, Golden
Age Clubs; Mrs. M. E. Lenz, Co
operating with Confraternity of
Christian Doctrine; Mrs. H. T.
Wilson, Historian; Mrs. A. J.

nley made an appeal for worn lin
en to be used in making cancer
pads and announced that more
.units are being farmed. Mrs.
Guild reported on the Civil De
fense Workshop which was held
on November 8 at the City Au
ditorium in Savannah. Mrs. Sey-
den announced that United Na
tions Day had been observed in
several parishes in the Savannah
Deanery. Miss McKenzie reported
that letters had been sent to all
the parochial schools in the Dean
ery invitin’g all Catholic children
to participate in the essay contest
being sponsored by the Diocesan
Council, the title of which will be
“The Mass.” It was also reported
that a Day of Recollection was
held on November 9 and a Family
Holy Hour on November 29 in
Statesboro.
Announcement was made, that
Mrs. Katherine Huggins had, been
elected to membership in the
Senior Citizens of America in
recognition of her work with the
Golden Age Clubs in Savannah.
Mrs. Norman I. Boatwright of
Augusta, Diocesan president, was
the guest speaker. Mrs. Boat
wright showed slides and gave
the commentary on the structure
of N.C.C.W.. stating that this fed
eration of Catholic women’s or
ganizations in the United States
numbers 9,000.000 women whose
purpose is to return all things to
Christ. Mrs. Boatwright was ac
companied by Mrs. Ernest Dink
ins.
Mrs. Joseph E. Kelly appealed
to all the organizations in the
Deanery to cooperate with the
project of the Savannah Federa
tion of Women’s Clubs in sending
useful gifts to the patients at the
State Hospital at Milledgeville.
These are to be sent to Mrs. Kel
ly’s home before December 10 for j
shipment to the Sanitarium.
The president, Mrs. Owen For- I
.ter, appointed the following' nom
inating committee:
Mrs. George Ebberwein, chair
man, Mrs. George Ruehrwein,
Mrs. Joseph Winders, Mrs. Joseph
J. Whalen and Mrs. Katherine
Huggins.
An invitation was extended to
the Deanery to hold its n e x t
quarterly meeting in March' in
Nativity Parish by Mrs. Robert
Stradtman, president of the Na
tivity Parish Council.
Prayers were offered for the
recovery of President Eisenhow
er, Rev. Thomas A. Brennan, Rev.
John A. Morris and Mr. A. J.
Schano.
After the meeting Benediction
was held in St. Matthews’
Church.
Organize Junior
Aitar Society
At Athens Parish
ATHENS, Ga. — Under the
sponsorship of St. Joseph’s Pa
rish Council, a Junior Altar So
ciety has been organized. The
purpose of this society will be to
give an opportunity to the young
ladies of the parish, from grade
6 through 12th, to acquaint them
selves with the proper care of the
altar.
The first meeting was held on
October 5. The following officers
were elected; President, Maria
Totis; vice president, Ann Allais;
secretary, Mavourneen O’Hagan;
treasurer, Mary Gerdine. This
group will meet twice a month
with Mrs. R. S. Freeman, advisor.

Cedartown Aid
Exceptional School
CEDARTOWN — A School for
Exceptional Children was under
taken as a project by the Business
and Professional Women’s Club
of Cedartown. The club felt the
project was so big they solicited
the help of citizens and other
clubs and a board was formed for
the prospective school.
The school is in session nine
months a year in session’s morn
ings. five- days a week. Mrs. Ann
Bernier,, a parishoner of St. Bern
adettes’ Parish in Cedartown,
volunteered to teach at the school
j without pay and was the only
j teacher when the school was
j started.

FORT OGLETHORPE — Mrs.
Myron Shultes was reelected
president of St. Gerard’s Altar
Society at the November meet
ing, held in the parish hall in
Fort Oglethorpe. Other officers
are Mrs. Herbert Buck, vice-pres
ident; Mrs. Ralph Brown, record
ing secretary; Mrs. Frank Baird,
corresponding secretary; Mrs.
Roy Foster, treasurer. Mrs. Rudy
Bullard presented the slate of
officers.
Rev. Walter Kuhn, C.SS.R.
pastor of St. Gerard’s Church, of
fered the opening and closing
prayers, and gave a brief talk on
“Sacrifice.” Mrs. Howard Gattis,
ways and means chairman, dis
tributed candy, which the mem
bers are selling for their projects.
Plans for the installation and
Christmas party were discussed.
Mrs. Shultes and Mrs. Everett
Schaerer will have the care of the
altars for the month, and Mrs.
Robert Lee, the altar linens. Mrs,
Margaret Hill and Mrs. S. H. Wil
liams were guests present. The
attendance gift was awarded Mrs,
Bullard. Mrs. Lee, assisted by-
Mrs. Bullard and Mrs. Gattis, was
hostess for the social hour.

Christmas Party

Christmas Party of the Altar So
ciety of Our Lady of the Assump
tion Church was held in the
School Auditorium on December
3. All members were invited to
attend and asked to bring a gift
not exceeding a dollar in value.
Refreshments'were' served after
the meetihg. The chairman of the
serving committee was Mrs. Paul
Calloway. She was assisted by
Mrs. Fintan Reilly, Mrs. William
Dawson, Mrs. Robert Wrig'ley,
Mrs. Frank Morgan, Mrs. William
Gray, Mrs. Thomas Barnhart,
.Mrs. Frank Asselin and Mrs.
Nancy Yantis.
