Winfield, Fla,, Jan. 27. 1896,
Elder A. V. Simms:
Dear brother in the Lord—My
mind has lately’ been considerably
on the sufferings, death, resurrec
tion and glorification of Christ;
and why He should have suffered
even the ignominious death of the
cross? I have been made to feel
many times of late that my indi
vidual sins caused the rugged nails
to be driven through his precious
hands, and that my transgressions
were the cause of his side being
pierced, whereat flowed blood and
watdr. And one historian tells us
that he was nailed to the cross
lying down, when they nailed both
hands and feet to the beams, and
that the cross was then raised and
dropped into a hole or socket made
for the purpose, thus tearing and
lacerating the flesh terribly. It
makes one shudder with horror to
think what he must have suffered,
and all for the sins ot his people;
and notwithstanding all ho had to
endure for his people, be forgave
them, and prayed to the Father
for them in language something
like this: “Father, I pray not for
the world, but for them that thou
hast given me out of the world.”
That brings us to realize to some
extent the language of Isaiah,where
he says: “In all thine afflictions
He was afflicted, and the angel of
His presence saved them,” etc. So
dear brethren, whenever we are
afflicted or distressed, if we can
just remember that in all our sor
rows He suffered for us,we shoulc
feel consoled with the thought
that He careth for us in every dis
tress. While our sins and trans
gressions caused His suffering and
death, when we can realize that
He forgave it all, it is enough to
fill us with wonder and astonish
ment, and with thankfulness to
His glorious and matchless name.
Oh glorious thought, he did not
only die for our redemption, but
arose for our justification, as He
tells His disciples while on earth,
“I go to prepare a place for you.
and will come again and take you
unto myself, that where I am
there ye may be also.”
So He is God, both of the dead
and living. Oh what a glorious
thought, that in the morning ol
the resurrection He will raise us
in His likeness and take us unto
himself, and so shall we ever b«
with the Lord!
When we contemplate the great
and glorious things He has done
for ur, we ought to try to live in
discharge of every Christian duty
by letting brotherly love continue
and so fulfill the law of Christ.
For myself I feel that it is impos
sible for me to sufficiently thank
and adore His matchless name.
Bless the Lord, oh my soul, and all
that is within me bless His holy
name!
I feel age creeping on, and I am
reminded that my stay here is
short, but I have a faint and glim
mering hope that when mySaviour
shall come the second time that
He will raise me in His likeness,
and that I shall see Him as He is.
With love to yourself and to the
household of faith, I am your
brother, in hope of a glorious res
urrection,
L. W. Rivers.

OBITUARY.
II. LANE, was born
JL .June 9th, 1825 and fell asleep in
the arms of his loving Sovior January
21st, 1896. lie was married 49 years
ago January 7th, and lie leaves a
broken hearted companion two sons
and three daughters yet surviving.
Four of his children are devoted mem
bers of the Primitive Baptist. He was
baptized into the fellowship of the
church 3rd Sunday in Sept. 1870, and
lived a devoted consistent member to
the day of his death. He was alllicted
for quite a while with a severe cough
and for several months before his de
parture, he was entirely helpless and
his sufferings w?re intense. The
writer visited his home many times
during his illness and could greatly
sympathize with him in his great
afflictions, and also his poor afflicted
family. He was ever ready to talk
about Jesus, and gave him all the
salvation of sinners.
He often spoke to me about his pass
age over the cold river of death, and
said that he was only waiting for Je
sus to call him home. He had no de
sire to get well. The nearer death ap
proached the more resigned he was to
the Lord’s will. He selected a hymn
he wanted sung at his burial.
“Jesus Thou art the sinner’s friend.”
His dying words about Jesus and
his dear brethren. He toid some of
his family that he was willing to go.
Be seemed willing to leave the world
and all behind to dwell with Jesus.
The poor bereaved family and
church will miss dear brother Lane,
for he and family have ever felt dear
to us, but he had finished his course
on the earth and Jesu° has taken him
to himself. His suffering have ceased.
The dear family have my sympathy
and feeble prayers that God may give
them supporting grace to bear their
trials and wait the few appointed days
of suffering till Jesus shall take them
home. This dear family have passed
through the deep waters of tribulation.
They yet have a sainted daughter who
has been affleted for several years and
has not walked in nearly two years,
and many times she has been at death’s
door, but the good Lord has sustained
them to bear their afflictions.
It takes afflictions to wean away
from the things of earth. May the
Lord graciously bless them.
Lke Hanks.
