The Mystic owls. October 20, 1880, Image 1

The Mystic Owls, likely associated with the Freemasons, was a secret organization formed in Atlanta in 1879. They first published the Mystic Owls periodical on October 20, 1880 in Atlanta, Georgia. Very little is known about the Owls except their annual costumed parades, prompting the Sunny South of November 8, 1879 to remark ‘who they are, what they are, where they come from and where they are going no one knoweth. But one this is certain, and that is that their street exhibition on Friday night of last week was surpassingly grand.’ These parades were thrown annually, and the October 20, 1880 issue of Mystic Owls appears to coincide with the upcoming 1880 parade. There are no other known issues of the periodical.
