NO. 202. —THE YANKEES AND THE TURKS.
There was once a vessel at sea, with a crew of
thirty men, who, after a long cruise, found that
they had only enough provisions to last half their
number until they could reach land. It was de
cided, therefore, to throw half of the crew over
board. The crew consisted of fifteen Yankees and
fifteen Turks, and as it was desirable to make at
least a show of impartiality in determining who
were to be thrown overboard, it was agreed that
all of the thirty men should stand in a row, and
that every ninth man was to be thrown over, the
count to continue until half the number had been
disposed of. A cute Yankee so arranged them
that every ninth man was a Turk. How did he
do it?
