Home Economics
Of Great Value
The subject of study for the past
two weeks in Home Economics 1,
has been “Home Economics —
Trained Women in Business.”
Each member of the class gave
an oral report on different phases
of the subject.
The largest field open to Horae-
Economic-Trained women is that
of homemaking. Until recent years,
no one thought of training women
for participation in this field. It
was thought that homemakers
were born -and not made —they
were either good, bad, or indiffer
ent, and there was no changing the
fact. Now, we know that educa
tion along the right lines can help
most girls and women to raise
their standards of lviing.
Since women are said to spend
about eighty-seven per cent of a
nation’s 1 wealth, they should be
taught to spend it wisely. And,
since time and energy are money,
they should know how to spend
and use them wisely, also. There
are two ways by which these
things may be learned —first, by
experience—'but experience is of
too long and expensive and some
people never profit by it; and se
cond, by education, which, although
sometimes rather expensive, pays
larger dividends in the end.
It is said that in order to write
for publication one must know
one’s subject and know how to tell
it. So a woman who is trained in
home-making is better fitted for
a position in the homemaker’s
column of a newspaper than one
who has no training at all. Thus,
many women fiind the field of
journalism open to them.
Then, there are openings in so
cial service, in hospitals and
schools as dietitians, in business
corporations having radio home
making programs, and teaching.
With the subject of positions
comles the question of material re
compense. The salaries of trained
home-economists in business range
from one hundred dollars a month
to twelve thousand a year. From
that standpoint alone, we can see
why the education of women In
Home Economics is paying such
dividends. The future of the nation
is ito be determined by the type of
citizens its homes produce. Will
they be good or bad? The answer
depends largely on the women of
the land and the training they get
in college.
Miss Willie Vie Dowdy, Home
Improvement Specialist for the Ex.
tension Division of the College of
Agriculture spoke to the Home Eco
nomics Class Nov. 7, on “How to
Improve Your Home.”
Miss Dowdy’s work is to encour
age girls to make home a better
place in which to live. She told us
that we may do this by refininshing
and repainting old furniture, se
lecting and hanging pictures, fin
ishing floors by making them
smooth and beautiful to look at,
and making the outside of the
home as attractive as possible by
planting shrubbery and flowers.
She said that it was just as
necessary to feed the mind as to
feed theh body, and that three
fourths of all diseases are of the
mind instead of the body.
Miss Dowdy is also trying to
teach women to be better manag
ers in the home by making plans
to keep every member in the fam
ily busy. Women who are good
managers render greater services
by making the other members of
the family do the work. This gives
the home-maker time for social
services and outside activities.
Home management and engineer
ing are just as important as love
in making a home.
In improving ones home, one
must first decided what needs im
provement. If your home is just a
hut, make it beautiful. Have a
place for everything and keep
