Class Progressing Nicely For the past two weeks, the Home Economic classes have been studying the field of Home Eco nomics, its requirements, its ad vantages and the possibilities in it. Letters have been written to wo men prominent in their profession or vocation that have had training in Home Economics to get an idea about the various aspects of their work. Child psychology has also been a most interesting subject of dis cussion. This was studied to ac quaint the future parent with her responsibilities and privileges. A public exhibit was held on No vember 20 from two-thirty until lour o’clock of the garments made by the girls this quarter with some of the girls serving as models. Many types of materials as well as various designs were shown. The purpose of the exhibit was to show the school and the community what the department is doing. A large number of students, faculty members and people trom town at tended and expressed approval of the good work done. The estimated saving on the dresses over the “ready-made" dress of the same type and ma terial was over thirty dollars. Miss Epsie Campbell, state sup ervisor of Home Economics, was a visitor in chapel and spoke to the Home Economics class Novem oer 24 on “The Possibilities of Leadership for a Person Trained in Home Economics.” Miss Campbell spoke from the stanapoint or a teacher, but her points may well apply to any well rounded person. She said that one, to be a suc cess, must begin on the shoulders of the person that preceded you or your work will fall in a rut. The public has its standards that its teachers must live up to. One of the first is personality. There are several types of personality, vivid, bubbling over, interested, serious and passive, the last two of which are hopeless. The second standard is morality. Your ideas may not correspond with those of your school trustees, but adjustments have to be made. The successful teacher must not waste time and must have execu tive ability. She has to lead others instead of being led, as an usual rule. She has to convince by lov ing instead of fighting and always be open to constructive criticism. She must cultivate an optimistic outlook on life, for there will be countless hard places to travel over and a sense of humor helps the most tragic situation over a sore spot. A successful Home Economics person is a student of human na ture, Miss Campbell said. The pass ing and changing world is one of her greatest studies and from it, she gets a greater knowledge of how to make herself more attrac tive and a larger part of civiliza tion. She develops poise, dignity and gracefulnes as well as uses tact and good judgment in any crisis. She must have the ability to be and look a Home Economic per son and care for her person, ideals and anything in anyway related to her in a creditable manner. She is able to mane a hovel more home-like and to transform a man sion to a more beautiful place. She makes others fall in love with home-making as an art and is a brilliant exponent of it. Over all this is a required foun dation in technique if one is to teach or become a home-maker. She must learn her vocation so thoroughly that it is a part of her and in the case of a teacher this is most essential. Last of all, Miss Cambbell said, “Bea womanly Woman. If the trend is the other direction, be the wisest and keep your feminity. You are training to be home-makers, which, after all, is a girl’s most important and thrilling job.” BOYNTON & SON Have your picture made for Xmas Gifts.
