Sports of the Day
Told in Brief
A person Is surprised to discov
er how many people go bunting
over Thanksgiving. We have sev
eral crack shots here among us.
Why lowell Varner laid 25 quail
in the roses and so did Don Bar
field. However, neither said how
many were flying.
And then to top off the hunting
over the holidays, David (Major)
Walker killed a poor defenseless
rabbit —the first victim of the Ma
jor s moving arsenal. We don’t
know why, but there are grave
doubts as to whether the rabbit
was in gear.
The results of football games are
about as certain as a woman’s
mind. Coach Alexander’s Yellow
Jackets last Saturday were expect
ing to get a real sting out of the
Blue Devils from Duke, but they
turned the tables and gave Coach
Wades crew a good shelacking,
thereby making the Devils go back
blue.
But when we heard of the Ga
ll. S. C. game, we were forced to
stand on our craniums so as to
appear to be smiling. Those Tro
jans stepped on the Bulldog s tail
early in the game, and apparantly
scared the southerner’ stiff. How
ever, the Georgian fought valiant
ly and lost to a team that is prob
ably the best in the country.
We’d like very much to know
the person or persons responsible
for ths* choice of Columbia as the
East's representative in the anual
Rose Howl Game in Pasadena on
Mew iear’s Day. Columbia is at
best not above seventh place in the
ranking of the team in the East.
Princeton defated Columbia 17-0
and Princeton is by no means a
championship team. Then too,
Columbia had a hot time displac
ing Virginia State, one of souths’
weakest teams. Then take a look
at Alabama with no defeats, only
one time tied, and one of the tough
est schedules of any college in the
U. S. Too, the Crimson Tide. Out
of four trips to the coast, hasn’i
lost a single game. Thus, we see
no reason whatever for the choice
of Columbia oyer Alabama and if
Stanford wins, we’ll not worry, for
Columbia is certainly not the best
team in the East, or, as for that
matter in the state of New York.
Down at the gym, Friday, Mr.
Bonner presented his physical-eu
students in aprogram which prov
ed very interesting. The program
consisted of contests of dodge ball,
captain ball., throwing for accu
acy, individual stunts and combi
nation stunts. The women gave the
men a good go in all events be
tween the two groups, and Mr.
Bonner even hints that the women
excell in the majority of events.
(But don’t be mislead; Mr. Bon
ner is unmarried.)
Although with no rep to live up
to, the dear old Alma Mater, from
all indications is going to put out
a red hot basket ball team. To
watch our boys practice one would
think he was watching one of the
leading college teams. In fact, we
had to look at our jerseys twice
to make sure we weren’t in on
secret practice of the renowmed
Celtics.

The school gets all the fame;
The printer gets all the money
And the editor gets all the blame.
Tennis Tournament
At West Ga. College
The tennis tournament has creat
ed a lot of excitement on the
Campus lately. In the first place
those who are playing are excused
from Physical Education classes,
and last but not least it gives the
boys a chance to court the fair
ladies with a minimum of expense,
(there being no charge for admis
sion).
The players are running true to
form, and some excellent matches
have been seen on the courts this
week. All of the slackers have
been eliminated. The bracket runs
as follows:
For the boys:
Driver vs. Newman.
Upchurch vs. Webb.
Platt vs. Varner.
Gladney vs. Davis.
Morris vs. Glazier.
J. Parker vs. Tillman.
From this
Newman vs. Wm. Brown.
Reaves vs. Hay.
Platt vs. Parker.
Tillman vs. Fisher.
Smith vs. Campbell.
Gladney vs. Harman.
Morris vs. Towns.
Upchurch vs. Loftin.
From this
Newman vs. Hay.
Platt vs. Tillman. ,
Campbell vs. Gladney.
Morris 1 vs. Loftin.
From this
Platt *
Campbell *
For the yirls:
Webb vs. Cheney.
Cross vs. King.
Andrews vs. Brandon.
Staples vs. Logine.
Black welder vs. Brock.
Bass vs. Gober.
Morrow vs. Ragsdale.
Phipps vs. Herndon.
From this
Webb vs. Cross.
Andrews vs. Staples.
Blackwelder vs. Gober.
Ragsdale vs. Herndon.
From this
Andrews vs. Webb.
Gober *
This takes us up to the Semi
Finals, and to our w r ay of thinking
they will be worth your time.
All games are to be off by Friday.
A losers bracket has been ar
ranger, but as yet no games have
been played.
* Game not played off.
That boy, “Big” Taylor, at cen
ter is a wizard. He handles the
the ball more like an apple than
anything else, and he seems in
mortal agony if he misses a shot
from center.
Then at forward, Driver, Fields
and Glazier are what is ordinarily
known as “it”. Fields has spells
of brilliancy which are rarely seen,
especially among so inexperienced
players. Driver is as good as can
be found in all-round ability, but
Glazier is probably the most con
sistent of the trio. Coach Bonner
will have a problem deciding which
one to cut off the first team.
Then at running guard, Hearn is
undoubtedly the best man. He
guards well and still finds time to
make some beautiful shots.
Then “Little” Taylor at stand
ing guard is also good using his
immense reach to the best advan
tage and covering his man like a
suit of clothes.
This combination should be able
to cope with the best of its rank
in the state, and too, it has much
good reserve material, such as
Simonton, Williams, Staples, Webb
and Campbell.
THE WEST GEORGIAN
STIHT GOVERNMENT
IS BIG TRIED IT
WEST Gl. GOEEEGE
The first step toward student
government was taken at West
Georgia when the students were
given the privilege of organizing
their governing bodies in the dorm
itory. This plan is to be used this
year as a trial of this system. It
is our duty as students to do all
in our power to insure West Ge
orgia will have In the future the
complete honor system.
At the first glance of the uniniti
ated, the honor system of student
government appears as an unneces
sary and unwonted shifting of res
ponsibility to the student. He says
that no friend of his should be put
over him. In life, for which college
Is a preparation, there are always
leaders to whom one looks for
guidance. It is naturally assumed
some will rise above the average
and how much more willingly we
follow a captain of our own choice.
In student government one has the
right to elect his leaders, or to el
evate himself to a position of es
teem that will cause him to be a
leader.
Student government cultivates
leadership. When the responsibili
ty for some fellow being rests par
tially on our shoulders we immedi
ately realize that to make his
ideals what they should be, ours
must be higher and we feel that our
relation to every person lias to be
strictly “on tne level.” At tne same
time, if we have to submit with
out question to authority that we
had no part in establishing it is
human nature to rebel and West
Georgians are no exceptions.
In a school where' the faculty or
some appointed board lias charge
of discipline, social standards and
otherwise there is always a feeling
of being over-ruled among the stu
dents, however good or lenient the
body may be. Student government
at the out-set overcomes that evil
by placing reasonable power in the
hands of reliable people who are
chosen by the person to be ruled.
This also greatly relieves the de
sire to be always in conflict with
those in charge.
If a person is honest at all, his
pride in himself is heightened by
another saying to him “I trust you
in your judgment to do the right
thing” and he is more likely to be
completely honest than if someone
were to express a doubt to his in
tegrity. If he is not honest, faith
in him often raises his ideals to
a point that refuses to let him be
dishonest just because you believe
in him.
Student government applies ex
actly this principle. Every person
is put on his honor to do the right
thing in the right way and his
pride in himself will not let him
tower his standards in the eyes of
his classmates.
The honor system is not anew
thing. It has been tried out in
many schools all over the world
and by their continuation of it, we
assume that is has been success
ful with them, at least more suc
cessful than any other method.
