BRAVES CLOSE DIAMOND
SEASON WITH EVEN BREAK
The West Georgia Braves con
cluded the diamond season by
breaking even; having six wins and
six losses. In Junior College loop,
the West Georgia nine had the
following results: North Georgia
College, Dahlonega, three defeats
and one victory; Gardon College,
Barnesville, three wins, two losses;
and Young Harris was trounced
for two wins out of three games.
“Big Tom” Gordon pitcher, led
the heavy hitters with nine hits
out of twenty-one trips to the plate
for an .average of .428. Kirby,
pitcher, was next with an average
of .415; He was followed by Fuller
Gordon with .357. “Pee Wee” Al
mon, .341, and Pendley, .317. Lady
luck must have smiled on
the Braves since they collected a
total of only 99 hits to the opposi

Kirby proved to be the leading

Much praise was given Manager

The team was composed of the

THE WEST GEORGIAN
Physicial Education And Other
Athletic Activities For Past
Year Are Reviewed
In the final analysis of sports
at West Georgia College during
the past year many interesting
angles are revealed. The intra
mural sports seemed better than
last year while the varsity squads
failed to measure up to last year’s
standards.
In the varsity department the
basketball team seemed to be the
year’s most miserable failure with
its record studded with defeats
by apparently lesser teams. Out
of 18 games the Braves managed to
win two and tie one. The entire
blame, however must not be put
on the team for enough luck fol
lowed them throughout the season,
most of the time in the form of
injuries.
The wrestling team had a medio
cre amount of success although not
impressive. They placed fifth in the
open Y tournament held in Atlanta
last February. Probably the most
redeeming feature in the wrestl
ing department was the fact that
noting Harris placed sixth in the
Otl me tournament.
The tennis team went to the
.mm-finals in the state meet held
acre. While not the winner, the
team played tough tennis and were
mnong the top ranking contenders
m the matches. West Georgia was
not blessed with stars but evenly
matched players, each of whom
was capable of upsetting any
body’s record and frequently did
so.
The baseball team was the re
< teeming factor of the varsity de
partment. After a slow start the
team swung into stride and beat
the best teams in the circuit with
Hard down, straight baseball.
Probably if the Nqrth Georgia
team hadn’t taken advantage of the
Braves slow start and won the
first two games of the season,
West Georgia would have placed
first.
The intramural sports came to
the front with a bang during the
past year. Some of the best
basketball games of the year were
seen in the intremural contests,
ihe zest and enthusiasm of the
boys anti girls drew relatively large
crowds. Girl’s basketball was at
its peak with many sterling play
ers. It was the envy of the boy’s
lo be able to shoot free shots like
some of the girls did.
Good players, and the interest
that only comes when everyone
plays made softball an outstand
ing success. The girl’s and the boy’s
finals and semi-finals saw hard
fought games with each game any
body’s game.
The minor sports such as ping
pong, badminton, archery, etc.
were large factors in the evr in
creasing interest in sports, especi
ally intramural sports.

terview Thursday that a coaching

stated.
Coach Taylor expects tennis to
be a mainstay during the summer
school.

ducted at the municipal pool in
Carrollton. ,
Elimentary games will be taught
for teachers in the lower grades.
The Athletic Department is put
ting in new equipment for all
sports carried on by the college
and he reveals that the cost of
the department for this year was
about six times as much as for
the preceeding year.
Taylor stated that the Atheletic
Committee desired a more con
centrated program of athletics for
the student body. The committee
felt that there was too much corn
students and that they wanted
more concentration and the parti
cipation of the student body as
a whole.
“Your teeth are like the stars,”
he said, And true, he was right,
her teeth were like the stars they
both came out at night.
