Religious Emphasis Week
(An Editorial)
0
What Is Religious Emphasis Week? Freshmen are begin
ning to ask. Every spring since the Voluntary Religious
Association was formed it has sponsored a week of in
tense emphasis on religion and its meaning to college
students. It is a sort of student revival, the last day of
which is designated as Parents’ Day. Invitations are ex
tended to parents and high school seniors in our territory
to visit us.
Why Is Religious Emphasis Week? To clarify hazy or
ill-grounded ideas about Christianity, to correct infan
tilisms in religion and open new vistas of thought, to give
students inspiration and depth of experience, to help
solve moral and ethical problems, and point the way to
meaningful living.
When Is Religious Emphasis Week? Wednesday, April
24 to Friday, April 26. .
How Is Religious Emphasis Week? By the untiring work
of the V. R. A. council and your unqualified cooperation
Over 100 students have been appointed on committees to
carry out the program. Nine assemblies are being plan
ned for the three days. With the support of every stu
dent on the campus we can make this the highlight of
1940—E. A. P.
Many Advantages In Third Year:
Student Government Discussed
SCHOLARSHIPS FOR.
TEACHERS GIVEN IN
THIRD YEAR PLAN
Thirty scholarships for third year
work are to be awarded to those
students who have merited them
because of their superior scholas
tic work here on the campus dur
ing their freshman and sophomore
years. Fifteen of these scholar
ships are given by Georgia Com
mandery Knight’s Templar and
the others by the Rosenwald Fund.
These hundred dollar scholar
ships are really gifts and are not
to be paid back unless the students
receiving them fail to enter the
teaching profession for at least two
or three years. In this case, the
gifts will be considered as loans.
A number of scholarship loans
will also be available to other stu
dents who are interested in third
year work. Application for these
scholarships should be made
through Dr. D. F. Folger, Dean of
Instruction.
Third year students will be of
fered additional education work
and one quarter of practice teach
ing which will be under direct fac
ulty supervision.
The Knight’s Templar scholar
ships were made possible through
a $70,000 fund set up in the will
of the late Mrs. Carrie E. White
side as the George B. Whiteside
Memorial Foundation in memory
of her husband, a Columbus, Geor
gia, capitalist. These fifteen schol
arships were matched by an equal
number of awards to girls by the
Rosenwald Fund.
This effort to give teachers who
are to be employed in rural areas
a broader concept of education and
more practical courses which they
can in turn teach to country stu
dents is expected to help raise the
standards and living conditions of
the rural people of the state.

APPOINTED GROUP
STUDIES STUDENT ,
DEMOCRACY
More student democracy
is the aim of certain facul
ty members who have been
working together on plans
to begin the third year
course at West Georgia.
A committee has been
appointed with Mr. Rob
erts, chairman, Dr. Eliason,
Dr. Folger, Miss Henderson
and Mr. Hogan for the
study of ways of promoting
student denwcracy. The
purpose of this committee
is to study means by which
West Georgia may institute
a more wholesome demo
cratic life for students, in
and out of class.
Mr.' Roberts recently stated,
'‘this will be a gradual process, an
evolution, it cannot be worked out
overnight. If we form our plans
fast we may be able to institute
some of the functions by next fall
at the opening of school.”
The committee at its first two
meeting discussed the possiblities
of how student government would
function on the campus; how an
honor council would function;
through what means the students
could take part in forming regula
tions and maintaining them.
The committee is making an at
tempt to measure student opinion
as to what should be done. Re
presentatives of the student body
have been invited In the first
meetings of the committee. Mr.
Hogan said, ‘lnterested students
are welcome to discuss this with
the committee, after It has been
discussed among the students. The
committee will submit its suggested
plan of atack, which, when It Is
evenftuaiUy worked out, will give
students ample recognition of their
jfeelings an(d suggestions. The
scheme Is unique and we are slow
about getting into It.”
This group holds weekly meet
ings to discuss the matter.
