Priorities, Money Impede
Technological Solutions
“Many of today’s major
problems, such as ecology, can
be solved with today’s
technology,” says Dr. Earle K.
Plyler. physicist at Florida State
University. “Our only holdups
are priorities and money.”
He cited as an example an
industrial plant that, when forced
by law to reduce pollution, cut it s
daily output of waste mercury
from nine pounds to nine ounces
within two weeks.
In his lecture last Thursday,
entitled “Science and Society,”
Dr. Plyler also lamented the fact
that “scientists have little say”
over how their discoveries will be
used. “It’s the politicians who
decide the applications of
technology,” he said. Again
citing an example, he said that

for defensive purposes.
REASONS FOR
ADVANTAGES
Dr. Plyler feels that there are
four main reasons for the great
scientific advantages of today -
the invention of the wheel, the
growth and storage of food, the
control of fire, and tribal
organization.
On the subject of the shortage
of jobs for qualified scientists,
Dr. Plyler looks ahead to 1975
when he feels there will be
enough jobs. “By 1980” he said,
“there will be more jobs
available than qualified people to
fill them.”
Dr. Plyler is a professor of
physics at Florida State
THE WEST GEORGIAN
University. His specialty is in
frared spectroscopy. He holds
degrees from Furman, John
Hopkins, and Cornell.
The lecturer was introduced by
Dr. Lucille Garmon, assistant
professor of physics.

The John F. Kennedy Interfaith
Chapel, located at the front of the
campus, was named in memory
of the late president, and was
dedicated by his brother, Robert,
in May of 1964. The chapel was
the dream of the Carroll-

and area lay leaders.
Truly “interfaith,” the historic
building served as St. Margaret’s
Episcopal Church and Our Lady

Catholic Church before becoming
a non-denominational college
chapel.

college by the Catholic Church,
now known as the Church of Our
Lady.
Area churches, alumni, and
other friends of the college raised
the funds to move the building to
the campus and refurbish it. The
chapel is always open, and
devotions are conducted daily.
