It's time for the West Georgian
bathing suit issue Yes folks, we have
entered the realms of such major
publications as Sports Illustrated and
Sport Magazine When I approached
editor Mike Byrd with the project he
told me in his view that was an
excellent idea When we discussed
budget he gave me a blank check and
told me to spend the minimum
amount necessary to have a good time
in Jamaica for a few days, but not to
come back without a story
Unfortunately for you readers, the
paper could not afford to send both a
writer and a photographer We knew
however, that a literate crowd like
yourselves would rather read about
bathing beauties than see them; so
David Edward stayed in Carrollton
and rested while 1 flew to Kingston,
Jamaica.
When 1 arrived at the Kingston
airport, 1 was met by several posters
describing the Miss Kingston Bathing
Beauty Contest I immediately hit the
beach where the event would be held
Misfortune hit once again when my
notes were destroyed in a small fire,
leaving me no adequate record of
what the contestants looked like.
I do, however, have some
recollection of parts of the contest.
The opening event was a bathing suit
contest which, incidentally, would
have photographed well Many of tfie
contestants were pretty girls, but
some were beautiful, while a third
group was merely attractive
The second event was anew
competition for a beauty contest. This
event was a one-word question and
answer session. One contestant, a
Miss Barbara Haynes was asked the
question why Her answer, "because 1 ’
left the audience stunned Other
contestants were asked how, where,
when and what
Upon leaving the contest I retired to
a more secluded portion of the beach

Bathing Suit
Time
where I was able to gather a bit ot the
true flavor of the tiny island's
commonwealth. At one time I situated
myself on a stretch of beach where . I
could view two styles of bathing suits.
One style, which I shall refer to as
large, had the straps on the back
partially obscured from spectators by
large folds of skin This is a very
attractive style and can be purchased
by Omar of Hollywood, c-o Omar
Tents and Things. A second
and slightly more petite model, which
1 call Euthanasia, allows the bather to
flash bedroom eyes in several
directions at once. This particular suit
and the other model are partially
forgotten as the national product of
Jamaica (that's Jamaica's drinking
product as opposed to smoking
products), began to take effect and my
vision was somewhat blurred. .
As evening approached I felt it was
time to examine one of Kingston's
beach discos Here I was surprised to
see young women dancing together,
and men sitting down watching
Unable to understand such behavior I
was determined to break in on one of
these unholy unions but was beat to
the punch by one of the wandering
poets on the island This man of
culture, who introduced himself to a
particularly lovely young woman, was
told to "bugg off shorty ”
As the hours wore on, I became
lonely and took out several Valentine
notes which I had been given last
week The fire began when the hotel
band got overly rowdy As people
began to get excited by the music
of the alligator-skm-dad duo, a candle
was knocked over burning the building
to the ground
I arrived back at Carrollton with
little more than the clothes on my
back but with some effort I have made
a prediction for this season’s
best-selling bathing suit. It will
definitely be wash and wear.
Stanley Brewer's 33 points.
The Braves will be seeking revenge
against Augusta Friday night since the
Jaguars have upset the Braves twice
this season "We haven't played well
against them hut we are capable of
beating them," Kaiser said.
The conference tournament has no
direct bearing as tar as the automatic
bids are concerned, " says Kaiser as the
Braves anxiously await a ticket to com
pete in the NCAA Division II regional
playoffs to lie held March 6-7.
"It would tie hard for us if we don't
get a bid." Kaiser said. "We've been in
the top 20 and we've had a good record
all year long." he said The Braves
were overlooked in 1978, however, after
they had won the conference title
West Georgia has put in a bid to host
the region tournament but Central
Florida, the number one ranked team
in the Southern Region, is in the lead
with a 21-3 record Central Florida
however, still has to play in its own con
ference tournament before the decision
is made as to which team will get an
automatic bid.
Garrett had an excellent game scoring
18 points, two steals and four assists,
Sheila Mitchum contributed 12 points
and 10 rebounds to the win. Lisa
Dunson provided eight points and six
rebounds Sonya Dickerson added six
points three steals and four assists.
Debra Reed had four points, and three
defensive rebounds.
The Ladies completed the hat trick
with yet another victory, this time
with a thrilling 61-60 triumph over an
always tough Augusta College squad
Again the story of the Ladies’ triumph
was the balanced-scoring attack led by
Sheila Mitchum and Mary Fletcher.
Both had 16 points, while Mitchum
added four rebounds and two steals,
and Fletcher came back with eight
offensive rebounds and 12 defensive
rebounds, and also found time to grab
two steals. Karen Garrett had 12
points, five rebounds, two steals, and
two assists Sonya Dickerson had nine
points, three rebounds and added four
assists.
Lisa Dunson had four points, seven
assists and two steals. And Debra
Reed contributed to the triumph with
four points, and three defensive
rebounds.

The Braves’ track team traveled to
Montgomery, Alabama on F'eb 16 to
compete in the Montgomery Open in

Docherty was not pleased with the over
all showing of his squad, he was very
pleased by the performance of Mike
Mead. Mead competed in the mile and
two-mile event and broke school

that having to run in both events hurt
Mead's speed. "He could have run the
mile even faster if he hadn't had to run

Docherty was disappointed by his
quarter milers. "No one but Mike really
stood out," he said "except maybe Ron
Mitchell, who ran a pretty good 600! "
Docherty saw the meet as his last
chance to see everybody compete

also gave Docherty a chance to com
