Off-Campus Quarters Could Remedy
Residence Hall Squeeze This Quarter
BY JEFF STYLES
Whether the reason is football, in
creased interest in an education, or the
popularity of the school, there is no de
nying the fact that more and more
students are coming to West Georgia.
Even though the advantages of such a
change will most likely outweigh the
disadvantages, there are certain pro
blems that must arise as the student
population goes up. One of the more im
mediate problems will be housing. It is
a fact that, at least at the beginning of
the fall quarter, there will be no private
rooms available to students. Many peo
ple who were expecting to be living by
themselves will suddenly find that they
may have a roommate. Even though
there has been no recorded rise in
waivers for off-campus living, all
freshmen and sophomores are required
to live on campus unless they can plain
ly explain why they should be allowed
to live elsewhere, or if they are living at
home and commuting, an off-campus
living area of some sort may be an
answer for many students.
There are three general areas in
which a student can live off campus.

THE WEST GEORGIAN, WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 23, 1981
Either in an apartment complex or
duplex, in a rented home or part of a
home of in one of the many trailer
parks that abound in Carrollton.
Probably the most popular of these
choices is the apartment complex.
There are many available to a student
in Carrollton, but it would be safe to say
that one of the favorites among college
kids is the Brookwood apartments,
formerly known as College Arms,
presumably because of the lower rates
and the location of the complex which is
very near the campus.
Marjorie Hudson of Real Estate West
commented that many college students
were moving away from the apartment
complexes and into rented homes in re
cent years. Most students gave such
reasons as lack of privacy, fear of fire
and poor construction for wanting to
rent a home.
The pattern that most students follow
is fairly usual. They almost always
group into pairs or trios before looking
for a place to rent. And they generally
like to get further away from the cam
pus than they used to. Many try to find a
place that is located near a fast-food
franchise or some other means of part
time employment. Students living in a
house can expect to pay from $l5O to
$250 a month, with or without utilities.
When asked if students were given a
special rate as they were at many
apartment complexes, Hudson replied,
Seo of Galilee Trip High lights
Trip to Holy Land, Egypt, Jordan
Would you like to take a boat ride
along the Sea of Galilee; visit the site
where Moses viewed the Promised
Land or walk through the streets of
Jerusalem?
West Georgia’s Alumni Association is
offering students, faculty and staff a
chance to tour the Holy Land, Egypt
and Jordan, at the lowest price possible
for an 11-day trip.
The trip is scheduled for after the fall
quarter final exams, to enable students
and faculty to participate.
The trip, scheduled for Dec. 7-17, will
cost $1,549 per person from Atlanta.
This price includes all transportation,
first-class hotels, three meals per day,
all tours and sightseeing and service
charges such as tax and tips.
A deposit of SIOO per person is re
quired no later than Oct. 1 and the
balance of the tour price is due no later
than Oct. 19.
Dr. Y. Lynn Holmes, Middle East
scholar, historian and minister will con
duct tours with the assistance of Phyllis
Fountain, director of development and
alumni services.
Holmes, associate professor of
history and director of placement and
“No. Asa matter of fact, sometimes
they are required to pay higher security
deposits than other people. They are
less stable and most owners would
prefer NOT to have students as
renters.”
One of the main advantages of ren
ting through an organization such as
Real Estate West is that it does give you
someone to complain to when problems
arise. They have their own extermina
tion system and they generally will take
care of most complaints.
Dean Wilboum of Elizabeth Village
Trailer Park did not agree on the sub
ject of college students being “more
destructive.” She said, “I’ve never had
any trouble whatsoever with the
students that we have had here. I think
the impression of a college student’s
wildness is mistaken. I feel they have a
good home and plenty of privacy at a
trailer park and they enjoy it.”
Someone who would like to rent a
trailer at one of the local parks should
expect to pay from $175 to $260 a month
with or without utilities.
Of course, there are other alter
natives to the three avenues of off
campus living mentioned here, but no
matter which direction a student
decides to take, he is urged to use cau
tion and good sense when making his
decision. Contact a lawyer if the need
arises and don’t sign anything without
thoroughly reading it over. y
cooperative education at West Georgia
has taught ancient and modern Middle
Eastern history and Biblical history at
West Georgia for 12 years and has
published extensively in these areas.
He studied at the Hebrew University in
Jerusalem for one year and has visited
the Middle East on six occasions and
taken tour groups there three times.
Departing Atlanta, the tour will make
connections in New York, stop briefly in
Amsterdam and the sightseeing will
begin in Cairo. Stops in Cairo include
the Egyptian Museum which houses the
precious treasures from the tomb of
King Tut, the Khan El-Khalili Bazaar,
the great pyrimids, the Sphinx, and a
visit to the ancient Egyptian capital of
Memphis to see the huge statue of
Ramses II and the 80-ton alabaster
Sphinx.
Aman is the next stop where the tour
will travel to Jericho, the oldest known
city in the world, to see its excavations,
the old walls, Elisha's spring and
Hisham’s Palace.
A special treat will be a 50-minute
boat ride along the Sea of Galilee from
Tiberias to Capernaum and then
Tabgah, the Mount of Beatitudes, and
excavation site at Biblical Samaria and
other Biblical sites in Jerusalem
A walking tour of the old city of
Jerusalem is planned which will in
clude the Place of Ascension, Mount
Zion, the site of David’s tomb, the
Room of the Last Supper, and many
othe sites.
In Jordan, the tour will proceed to
Mount Nebo where Moses viewed the
Promised Land, see the ruins of Jerash,
and the mosaic floor with the sth
century map of Jerusalem located in
Madeba.
