Student Parking in Short Form;
Zones and Colors Explained
\ ou've got your ear on campus, but
with all these rules and codes, letters
and colors, you still don't know where to
park and for how long
Basically, color code parking tells
you where you can and cannot park and
zoned-parking codes tell you who can
park where
What you should remember about the
color-code is that yellow and red curbs
mean “no parking anytime.” You may
park straddling the yellow curb on
Front Campus Drive for purposes of
loading and fee-payment for a max
imum of one half hour This is the only
exception to the no parking rule Green
curbs are designated for faculty and
staff, white curbs are for student park
inc and blue curbs are open to anyone.
Visitor parking is reserved for
visitors from 7 a.m. to 5 p m on class
days and during final exam periods
Faculty-staff parking is in effect
from 7 a m. to 5 p.m class days and ex
am days Anyone may park in these
areas at any other time, but non
registered and student registered
vehicles must not be parked in these
areas during these periods
Peer Advisement Examined in Experiment
How effective can trained student ad
users be in keeping their fellow
students in school?
A student mentor experiment is
under way this quarter under the
guidance of Vice President John Lewis.
It w ill determine w hether freshmen can
benefit from returning West Georgia
students who will serve as friends and
advisers in academic and extracur
ricular matters as the new students ad
just to college life
The experiment involves 17 returning
sophomores, juniors and seniors and
170 randomly selected new freshmen
with undecided majors The mentors
and new freshmen met for the first time
Sunday.
The mentors will aid the new students
as they begin their college careers by
giving them information about
registration, buying books, cashing
checks, finding classrooms, finding the
infirmary and counseling services or
any other of the facilities available on
campus They will continue to give the
students advice and direction in ad

Zones L, M N and P in Zoned Parking
are restricted 24 hours a day This
means that no car but those registered
with the appropriate zone sticker may
park in these areas
Zone R is not restricted. This means
that students with R permits and any
other students may park in this area.
Zone S is restricted from 7 a m. to 5
pm. daily. This means that only
students with S permits can park in
these areas from 7 to 5, but other cars
can park in these areas any other time.
For more detailed information and
descriptions of zone areas check pages
6 and 7 of your traffic code.

freshmen year.
Freshmen with undecided majors
were selected for the experiment
because they might have problems
identifying with and feeling a part of
the college community, according to
the program's planners
Applications for the mentor positions
were solicited by the program’s com
mittee which then conducted interviews
and training sessions for the selected
participants
The mentors were selected on the
basis of their demonstrated ability to be
sensitive, concerned and effective with
other students, and to take the initiative
in relationships and give the time and
effort necessary to serve their peers,
according to the committee
Mentors must have completed 45
hours of study with a "B" average at
West Georgia; so the roster of
Presidential Scholars was a primary
source in selecting the mentors The
T raff ic Code
Digested...
The newly revised West Georgia Traffic Code is quite a lengthy document in
deed. Amen. Common sense is a good, general rule of thumb. In an attempt to
assist student drivers on campus the following is offered:
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS TO AVOIDING TRAFFIC FINES
1 Get your vehicle registered as soon as possible. (Come Monday, there will
be no more warning tickets.)
2 The parking situation has become a little more complex with the addition of
"zoned parking" this year Refer to ‘Zoned Parking" for further details. All
vehicles must park so the rear bumper faces the adjacent traffic lane. Don’t
park against the flow
3 Never park on a yellow or red curb. Green curbs are for faculty-staff only.
White curbs are designated for student parking.
4 Don't park in a space designated for handicapped persons if you’re not han
dicapped Penalty. Your car will be towed to No Man’s Land. No questions ask
ed
5 The speed limit campus wide is 25 m.p.h.
6. Visitors must obtain a temporary parking permit. If you operate a second
vehicle and it is non-registered, you must also obtain a permit for that car. Per
mits are issued 24 hours a day The decal issued to one vehicle cannot be
transferred to another vehicle.
7. Parking meters hours of operation are from 7 am —5 p.m. Monday-
Thursday and from 7 a.m.—3 p.m on Fridays.
8 The registrant of any motor vehicle is held responsible for the proper park
ing of his/her vehicle regardless of who may be the operator.
9 When an individual must operate an unregistered vehicle on campus, e g.,
borrowed car, rental, etc., a seven-day permit can be obtained anytime at no
charge (Limit of two per quarter).
10 Pay all traffic fines on time. If you pay them within five days, most viola
tions will be reduced 50 percent.
It is recommended that the Traffic Code be read in its entirety. Happy Motor
ing
formation of the program has a two-fold
purpose, according to Dr. Lewis: to
give assistance to incoming freshmen
and to recognize West Georgia's honor
students
The program will be evaluated at the
end of the academic year to determine
its effect on the successful adjustment
to college life of the advisees in the pro
gram. Academic performance and
retention rate of these students will be
com [Hired with these same factors for
freshmen who did not have the benefit
of peer counseling.
"We don’t know for sure that it will
work We hope that the students who
this year are working with mentors will
become mentors themselves. Then
we ll be able to make this continuous
and the students will be able to return
the service given to them,” said Lewis.
