Media Day links students with professionals

Have you ever
wondered what you are
going todo with your degree
upon completion of your
time here at the University
of West Georgia?
Well, for those who
are majoring in Mass
Communications, the time
has come to find out.
The University of
West Georgia’s 25th Media
Day features the theme
of “Celebrating Media
Leaders: Networking for
Success.”
Media Day 2006 is a
chance to bring working
media professionals to
campus so that Mass
Communications students
can meet them and make
career connections.
On Wednesday,
April 5, various Mass
Communications alumni
of UWG will meet in
the Lower Level of Z-6
and share some of their
experiences with students.
The keynote speaker
International students attend leadership conference

“Lead from the edge.
Have the courage it takes
to become global leaders,”
said Stephanie Ray, at the
2006 Georgia International
Leadership Conference.
Ray is the Associate
Dean of Students and
Director of Diversity
Programs at Georgia
Institute of Technology.
She was the keynote
speaker at the conference
last weekend.
The GILC is an annual
conference organized
by Georgia Perimeter
College’s International
Student Admission &
Advising Department.
International student
leaders from colleges

is Tyler Sieswerda, a 1995
UWG graduate who is a
news anchor for KVUE
TV in Austin, Texas.
Following Sieswerda’s
speech will be a panel
discussion featuring various
UWG alumni.
The panelists
accompanying Sieswerda
are Eric Cravey, a 1986
graduate who is President
ofCravey Communications
in Orange Park, Fla.; Jhmes
(Jimmy) Milans, a 1989
graduate who is Creative
Director/Post Production
of iQTV, Inc.; Jeff Styles,
a 1982 graduate who is a
Host for The Morning Press
for WGOW Talk Radio
102.3 FM in Chattanooga,
Tenn.; and Angela Webster,
a 1986 graduate who is
Editor of the Newnan-
Coweta Magazine.
Festivities will begin
at 9:30 a.m. with an
internship fair featuring
company representatives
who will be recruiting
students for potential
internships with their
organizations.
A few of the

Eleven international
students from UWG were
competitively chosen to
attend the conference to
build on their existing
leadership qualities.
Some of the students
who attended were Max
Richard Matz and Nici
Ball from Germany, Carlos
De La Guardia from
El Salvador, and Bintu
Marong from the Gambia,
Adenike Ishola, Lola
Jimoh and Biola Eyitayo
from Nigeria.
They were
accompanied by Olufunke
Shittu who served as their
International Student
Assistant.
The student
participants were exposed
to a weekend of fun,
companies that have
agreed to participate
include Chick-fil-A,
Southwire, Atlanta’s WB
36, Fox 5, Georgia Public
Broadcasting, UWG’s
Office of Communication
and Marketing, and
WTVM/WXTX out of
Columbus, Ga.
Other happenings
throughout the day include
an awards luncheon
and an opportunity for
students to talk one
on-one with different
people associated with
various media including
television, radio, print,
and public relations.
This “break-out”
session will give students
an opportunity to network
with UWG alumni in a
casual setting.
Various awards will
be given out on Media
Day including five awards
of excellence in the areas
of public relations, print
journalism, broadcast
journalism, media
production, and highest
GPA.
Students who hold a
learning and lasting
friendships from around
the globe.
The workshops and
activities were organized
such as to reflect the
importance of leadership
and team work.
Glenroy Foster, a
freshman at UWG says
that he will take back the
teachings on tolerance of
different cultures around
the globe.
“I have learned a lot
over this weekend and
have made friends from
around the globe who
share similar interests and
were also willing to share
their culture with me.”
On Saturday evening
students were treated to a
marvelous performance
by professional Flamenco
Dancers.

Last Thursday, the second annual
Chili Cook-Off was held in the Z-6 at
12:30 in front of several hungry West
Georgia students.
The contest, which was sponsored
by ARAMARK and UWG Dining, pitted
10 students against each other as they
competed for three different gift cards
from Target.
The students cooked their chili in the
Z-6 kitchen to have it tasted by students
and a panel of seven judges who were
students, faculty and staff members.
The first place award and a SIOO
gift card went to Laurel Starling for her
“Laurel’s Wicked Chili”.

be recognized for their
academic achievements,
and students will also
be recognized for their
professional development
activities.

Everyone seemed to
enjoy learning anew style
of dancing. The crowd
shouted “Ole” to express
how much they liked the
performance.

Hannah Perkins and her “Mom’s Chili”.
The second and third place winners won
Target gift cards valued at SSO and $25.
Like last year, t-shirts were given
away and there was plenty of chili for all
of the students in Z-6 to get a sample, but
there were also some new attractions at
this year’s event.
This year, there were two MCs for the
event, Kelcy McKay and Tony Williams.
Overall, the event was successful
according to Kelly Bass, ARAMARK
Marketing Specialist.
“We got many compliments (from
students). I could not have been more
pleased,” Bass said. “We had lots of help
from many people, including the judges
and participants. 1 can’t wait until the
third annual Chili Cook-Off.”
