Welcoming our newest
international students

Some students are
quite determined to
succeed and among those
are international students
who travel miles and
come to a foreign land,
leaving their loved ones.
International students
leave no stone unturned in
order to excel in school.
Some even experience
sacrifices and fight
obstacles to make it to
the land of opportunities.
This isone of the main
reasons our international
student population seems
to do so well in class.
This fall, UWG has
admitted about 36 new
international students,
and the not so old students
would like to extend a
warm welcome to these
bright new faces.
UWG has been a home
away from home for many
and we hope to keep that
tradition an on going one.
On behalf of all
the members of the
International Student
Club, I would request all
UWG students, faculty
and staff to help and
guide our International
visitors and help them
feel at home.
I was well received
and that is why I chose
West Georgia. I have
shared all my good
experiences with the new
students, so I hope all
good things will continue
to flow.

Letters to the editor...
Angry about
parking
Dear Editor,
I commute to college
like many other students
do, and for the last few
semesters I have seen
parking around the
campus slowly worsen.
I’m more than a little
upset that the Campus
Community Center was
built before more parking
or even a parking deck.
Sure the center looks
pretty, but is it really
what we needed right
now?
I pay a transportion
fee for this school even
though I spend the same
amount if not more in

Opinion
that some American
students are not aware
about world cultures.
There have been
several instances where
Nigerian students have
been asked if they lived
in tree houses and with
wild animals, a lot of
students from India have
been asked if they rode to
school on elephants and I
have been looked down
on because, according
to my not so informed
friends, Indians have
taken away all their jobs.
The main mission of
the International Student
Club is to create a more
aware environment about
the diverse world and
I hope to do this with
the help of the West
Georgian, UTV and
my international and
American friends.
Students who travel
abroad face a lot of
uncertainties and there
are times when they feel
very lost. They even tend
to isolate themselves
from others. Our job
is to make them feel
comfortable and work
towards understanding
their issues.
The best way to do
this is to put ourselves
in their footsteps and see
how' one feels when they
are surrounded by foreign
people and strange
customs. Of course,
international and student
abroad students have a
better understanding of
their situation.
How many of us love
traveling? Well, having
international friends is
money driving to and
from Douglasville to
school.
I want to see my
transportation fee spent
on something that I
can benefit from, more
parking so I don’t have
to get up even earlier to
fight for a spot.
I’m going to start
joining other students
around campus by
demonstrating and
putting up signs up! Free
up some asphalt!

In regard to a recent
article about Alice
the best way to fulfill
that dream.
Besides, there is so
much you can learn from
them.
You can learn that
American English is
not always the correct
English, that different
countries spell and
pronounce their words
differently than they do
in America and that to
international students
you are the one who has
the accent.
It is incredible how
much knowledge you
will be exposed to.
If you think this
is interesting and that
you want to step out of
your box and learn more
about the world, then
joining the International
Student Club will be
a great way to learn
about a culture that is so
different from you, yet
very fascinating.
Let me clear up one
myth. You do not have to
be an international student
to join the International
club. Our doors are always
open to those who want to
respect our beliefs.
The club members
work together all year
to put up various events
throughout the year for
the community. One such
event has even become a
UWG ISC tradition- The
International Night.
So if you have any
questions write to me or
talk to an international
student about your
interest and you’ll see
how you will be blessed
with eternal friendships.
Stacey, I would like to
make a correction.
The genetic disorder
albinism is not related
to any of the medical
problems listed with
the exception of visual
impairment.
I also have albinism.
There is so much
misinformation about the
disorder. If anyone would
like accurate information
please check out www.
albinism.org, the official
National Organization
for Albinism and
Hypopigmentation
(NOAH) website.
I understand that the
writer of the article only
had good intentions.
Alice was my friend, and
I miss her very much.

There are how many more
students? You’d think more
parking would have been added
over the summer.
Where are the three lanes of
bowling in the new community
center?
When is George Hawkins going to
review Snakes on a Plane? It is one
of the greatest movies of all time.
I never thought I would see Steel
Pulse in this newspaper. Who is
next, Eek-a-Mouse?
Foam in the fountain. It wasn’t
funny last year and it’s not funny
now. It will always come back,
though. Kind of like that annoying
street preacher.
