The paper needs you
By Bobby Moore
Editor-in-Chief
uwgpaper@westga.edu
I suppose you were all
expecting a “we need you”
column in our newspaper’s
first issue of the year. You
were wrong because that
column is in our second
issue.
There were some
things I wish I had done
differently last semester
when it comes to a lot of
things. I can do better if
I put my mind to it, but
I need your help if this
newspaper is going to be
as good as it should be.
You may be
wondering what you can
do. Well, there are two
different options.
You could complain.
There are lots of ways to
do that. You could send
some submissions for the
“Rant & Rave”. You could
do what some others have
done and say that we are
too liberal on Facebook.
If that does not float
your boat, you could
always participate. As
former Dead Kennedys
lead singer Jello Biafra
once said, “Don’t hate the
media, be the media.”

not make cable networks
less biased, but if you feel
strongly about the major
issues that face college
students then you might
enjoy seeing your opinions
in print.
The only reason you
are seeing more liberal
viewpoints in the Opinion
section is because I am not
getting a lot of response
from the conservatives on
campus. I know you are
out there, and surely you
have a lot to say since this
is an election year.
There are other
options you could explore
when it comes to working
for this newspaper. We
can never have too many
staff writers. There are
numerous campus events
and interesting students
and organizations to cover,
so do not think that you
will have trouble finding
story' ideas.
If you are not too keen
on covering news, we
currently have a couple of
writers who like to cover
music, but it would be
nice to see a little more
variety in our reviews. I
have written about music
the past two weeks, but
I might be the only fan
of Madness and Prince
Buster on campus.

There are probably
readers who are more
interested in mainstream
music, and that is
something that you are not
going to hear about from
me. If you and your friends
want to read about the top
40, then write about it.
If I still have not
mentioned something that
you enjoy writing about,
then hopefully you are a
sports fan.
Sports editor Ray
Ross and staff writer
James Robinson are both
former athletes, so I have a
lot of confidence in them.
However, I am sure that
they would love to have
some help.
Josh Grubb, our photo
editor, would probably
love to have some extra
help, too.
If you would like a
position with the West
Georgian, you should
come by our next staff
meeting on Monday at
noon in UCC room 111.
There will be free Papa
John's pizza on hand for
anyone who stops by.
You do not even have
to fill out a survey or
sign up for a credit card
to enjoy a few slices. I
would be willing to say
that it is a good deal.
Mascot change is my fault
The View
From My Front Porch
With Larry Peel
lpeell@my.westga.edu
It is my fault, I admit
it. I am the reason the
school mascot changed.
It isn’t the first time it has
happened to me either, I
seem to attract change.
It all started when I
was in the sth grade. I went
to Mt. Carmel Elementary
and a debate began about
changing the mascot.
The county high
school and middle school
teams were all based on
large cats. We had the
Lithia Springs Lions, the
Douglas County Tigers,
the Chapel Hill Wildcats
and so on.
Well Mt. Carmel was
the Rams. What place did
a ram have w ith a bunch of
wild cats they all wondered,
except to serve as dinner?
So the debate began.
Later I attended Chapel
Hill Middle School, which
I have been told has gone
from being the w ildcats to
being the panthers.
When I was in high
school, the new Robert

Alexander High was being
built, and since mine was
the senior class who would
be split to form the first
graduating class of the
new school, we were asked
to choose the mascot.
For the record the vote
was overwhelmingly for
Bears...remember Lithia
and Douglas County?
We would have had
Lions and Tigers and Bears,
oh my! The school board
failed to see the humor and
went with the cat theme.
Then eventually I went to
college. The University
of West (ieorgia was not
my first school, as I went to
Kennesaw State College for
a few semesters in 1993.
Back then they were
known as the Hooters.
Ihe restaurant was not
very well known yet.
Then political correctness
set in So we became the
Lighting ()wls.
Now I have come
to LWG and political
correctness has followed
a lie Uleat (ftcurgiau
me here.
Now don't get me
wrong, I have Native
American heritage on
my mother’s side, so I
understand the emotions
involved.
So we have gone from
the Braves to the Wolves.
This time though I think I
like the change. Sure the
Braves has a nice ring to
it, and it likens us to the
Atlanta team who up until
this year had an incredible
run going, but that was
also a downfall for us.
We were not unique.
It was almost like being
a farm club. What was
special about us?
If someone was walking
around with a Braves cap,
were they showing school
spirit or supporting Major
League Baseball?
Marketing and
funding aside, the change
to the Wolves is a very
important spirit booster
for the university as a
whole as well.
Asa species, wolves
are very territorial, they
w ill defend their turf with
an intensity few others
have.
I could go on and on.
So I guess it is my fault
that the mascot changed.
I don’t mind this time.
