Volleyball team rallies
on Saturday, pulls 2-2

The UWG volleyball
tipped off their season
this past weekend in
Pensacola, Florida at the
West Florida Tournament.
After dropping the first
two games Friday, the
team circled the wagons
and won both games
Saturday to finish the
tournament at .500.
Friday’s games were
played against Northwood
and Ashland, both
perennial contenders in the
Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Conference. Northwood,
a Regional finalist from
a season ago, gave the
Wolves all they could
handle and more, defeating
UWG 3-0. The second
game on Friday turned
out to be even worse as
Ashland swept UWG 3-0.
With such a young
team this year for head
coach Regan Adams,
Friday turned out to be
exactly what she feared,
but the team responded
admirably on Saturday by
notching two wins.
The first win came
against Edinboro where the
Wolves won by a score of
three games to one. After

dropping the first game
30-27, the team showed
their resilience by winning
three consecutive games to
take the match including a
30-14 drubbing in the third
game.
Paige Ely, Carolin
Schoeneck and Juliana da
Silva were the key players
leading to the first win of
the season as they all had
double-digit kills. Juliana
da Silva led the way with
18, followed closely by
Schoeneck and Ely with 16
and 13 kills, respectively.
The Wolves also
played exceptional
defense, tallying five
blocks in the contest from
several different players.
The final match of
the tournament for the
Wolves against Lewis
was hard fought by both
teams, but in the end
UWG prevailed with a 3-
2 win.
The Wolves won the
first game by a score of 30-
28 before dropping two
straight games to Lewis.
The Wolves refused to
lose, coming back to win
the forth game 30-28
to force a fifth and final
game, w hich they won by
a count of 15-8.
Schoeneck and da
Silva were again the
leaders offensively, both
stacking up over 20
kills. Schoeneck almost
reached the 30 kill mark in
a single contest, finishing
with 28.
Kills are a vital aspect
of the game, but cannot be
made without great team
play and a good setter.
Often times the role of
setter is looked over, but
Virginia Beach native
Micque Parker did a great
job in setting up all the
kills for Schoeneck, da
Silva and Ely.
Even though the
volleyball team dropped
their first game against
Northwood, it was still
historic for the university
and UWG athletics as the
much anticipated Wolves
made their athletic debut.
The volleyball team
will play this weekend at
the Wingate Invitational
in North Carolina. The
Wolves will play host
Wingate on Friday,
followed by three
matches on Saturday
against Queens (NC),
UNC-Pembroke and
Wingate again to finish
the tournament.

Soccer team struggles in
season opener, falls 5-1

The UWG soccer
team traveled to Conway,
South Carolina this past
Friday for a match with
Coastal Carolina to begin
their season. Even though
the Wolves lost by a score
of 5-1, it would have
been a tall order to come
away with a win against a
talent laden D-l school in
Coastal Carolina.
The game began
with a flurry of attacks
by Coastal Carolina, as
they scored two goals
in the first 15 minutes
of the contest. After
surrendering two early
goals the Wolves gathered
themselves, shutting out
Coastal Carolina until
just before the half when
another goal was added,
swelling the deficit to 3-0.
In the second half,
the Wolves collected their
first goal of the season
from Preseason All-GSC
player Brittany Carr in the
78th minute.
As expected, freshman
goal keeper Jennifer Ross
would be challenged.
Even though she yielded
five goals, she played the
entire contest and got her

first taste of collegiate

Goal keeper is a vital
position to any soccer
team on any level, and
more often than not will
play a large part in how
successful the season is.
Even though the
only two goal keepers on
the roster are freshmen
Jennifer Ross and Patricia
Logsdon, head coach
Marisa Kovacs is confident
they will perform well
enough to win games.
It will take some time
for both Ross and Logsdon
to acclimate themselves to
the college level and will
not come without some
growing pains. However,
as the season progresses
look for the goal keeping
to get markedly better and
in the end net wins.
Even though it might
take some time for the
keepers to come around,
the team is strong enough
in other areas to pick up
the slack.
With standouts
Carr, Sam Malone and
Alex Udin, look for the
Wolves to rebound and
make a strong run at the
postseason.

an aberration since they
are Division-1 and it is
likely UWG will not face
a squad as talented as
Coastal Carolina until later
in the season.
Head coach Marisa
Kovacs, a former
assistant, will also
improve her skills, and
by season’s end the team
should be clicking on all

In their exhibition game

Wolves played comparable

the team to gatherexperience

The Wolves will travel

this weekend for a pair

on Friday followed by a
match against Columbus
State on Sunday.
The Wolves will play

September Bth when they
host Eckerd, followed
by another home game
September 10th against
Lynn.
The first GSC game
will be September 22
against Delta State.
