Thanks , Atlanta Braves
The Editor’s Box
With Bobby Moore
mioore7@my.westga.edu
We are all going to
have to face it. It is the end
of an era.
Just like when Bo
Jackson went over the
top to end Alabama’s
dominence in football in
1982 (the fide had won
33 and one half National
Titles prior to that famous
play), the New York Mets
have put a stop to the
Atlanta Braves' streak of
consecutive division titles.
I, for one, am going to
be a sport about it iuid say
thank you to a franchise that
has entertained me for years.
I'll admit that 1 did not
watch the Braves before
1991. 1 was 9 years old
when they played in that
historic World Series, and
after I'd heard about what
was going on from everyone
including the barber and the
older folks at church. 1 had
to learn this unknown game
of baseball.
As you can probably
guess, I grew up around
Auburn football.
While both me and
my stuffed animals had
filled the couch to see
Coach Pat Dye plenty of
times, this new sport was
very different.
For one thing, it was
odd that Steve Avery,
my favorite player, was
not on field every night.
Terry Pendleton was,
though, so I made him
my favorite player so I'd
have a reason to watch
each game.
By the next season, 1
had more of a clue about

what was going on, and I
actually remember when
baseball's second greatest
home run hitter could not
throw' out the slowest
man in baseball history at
home plate.
After a division race
for the ages and a strike
shortened season, Avery
was in Boston and Atlanta
was World Champions.
I still remember a
friend who is no longer
with us who was a huge
Braves fan. He was almost
in tears the day after the
Braves won the World
Series because he felt like
he was being rewarded as
a fan after all of those
years of suffering.
One year later. The
Braves adopted a different
image when they blew a
2-0 lead against the New
York Yankees.
They may not have
been the “team of the
90’s” anymore, and
they probably weren’t
“America's team" to begin
with, but they were still
Atlanta's best sports team
ever.
I'm not going to break
down every season, but it
has been fun to watch this
team over the years.
There have been ups
and downs, of course.
For every Greg Maddux
masteipiece there’s been a
Randy Johnson perfect game
or a mile-wide strike zone
for Livan Hernandez (I’m
still bitter about that one).
Overall, though, there
are cities that would kill
to enjoy all of the good
baseball we have seen in
Atlanta.
Unfortunately, Atlanta
is not like every other city.
We seem to abandon
teams that don’t have a big
“g” on their helmet in this
state. Let’s put a stop to
that trend.
For one thing, the
future is not too bleak.
In 2002, I saw the
Rome Braves win the
South Atlantic League with
players like Kyle Davies,
Jeff Francoeur and Brian
McCann.
These guys didn't
stop being winners all of a
sudden.
Also, look at the
division this team is
play ing in. The Mets have
some great young players,
and so do the Philadelphia
Phillies. As for the Florida
Marlins, they won’t die.
There should be some
exciting baseball in the
National League Last for
years to come.
Who should get the
credit for all of the success
the Braves have enjoyed?
I'm going to give a lot
of it to General Manager
John Schuerholtz, since
he has succeeded both in
Atlanta and Kansas City.
Thank about that for a
second. Succeeding with
the Royals. That’d be like
succeeding at Kentucky
in football before going
to Alabama (happy now,
Bama fans?).
Regardless of who
gets credit or blame for
what the Braves have
and haven't done over
the years, 1 think we
should at least give them
a hand for pulling off the
most impressive streak of
division championships
in history.
