It was a nail biter for
the Wolves last Saturday
as they defeated the 801 l
Weevils of Arkansas-
Monticello (1-7, 1-4) by
a score of 20-14 in double
overtime.
The game ended w ith
a 27 yard touchdown run
by James Kennebrew in
double over time to seal
the Wolves’ first win of
the season.
Coming into the
game, it was obvious that
the match up may be the
Wolves’ last chance to
tally a win this year, be
ing that their final three
games of the year are
against teams that are na
tionally ranked 15th or
better.
The Wolves made
good on that chance as
they blitzed UAM fresh
man quarterback Lafay
ette Fredrick all night
long, forcing him out of
the pocket almost every
passing play.
The UWG offense
was clicking on all cylin
ders as well, as they put
up 327 total yards.
220 of those yards
were through the air. Re
ceivers Jay Holbrook and
Johnny Williams both
had their best game of
the season, combining for
170 receiving yards.
The last away game
of the year for the Wolves
began with Andre Cul
pepper and Odell Willis

yard loss on the first play

Headed into the final
four games in GSC play,
the volleyball team needed
to win three out of four in
order to return to the post
season tournament for a
third consecutive season.
On Thursday, the
Wolves took a step in that
direction, defeating West
Alabama for the second
time this season.
Things did not get
any easier though as the
Wolves traveled to play
Montevallo. The Wolves
knew the match was go
ing to be tough since
they had already defeated
Montevallo at home in
mid-September by a score
of 3-2.
Montevallo bested the
Wolves this time around
though, defeating the
Wolves 3-1.
The loss forces the
Wolves into a win or go
home type situation for their
two remaining GSC games.
If UWG loses to either
North Alabama or Alabama-
Hunts', their post-season
hopes will be shattered.
The Wolves looked
like a team on a mission
at home last Thursday, de-
BSDortsy^
get first victory in double OT thriller
of the game.
The defense forced a
three-and-out and the ball
changed possession sev
eral times until Wolves
quarterback Brett Yenser
found Holbrook on a post
route in the corner of the
end zone for a 14-yard
touchdown. The PAT
made the score 7-0 late in
the first.
On the next drive
for UAM, it looked as if
the Wolves’ defense had
forced another three-and
out, but a fake punt on
4th and 5 got the Weevils
a first down to end the
first quarter.
That drive ended
with a hobbled snap on
a field goal attempt that
gave the Wolves the ball
on their own 6.
After a Stewart Cook
fumble gave the Weevils
the ball back deep in their
own territory, the Wee
vils drove 44 yards and
looked poised to score.
It was not to be as
Larico Stevenson inter
cepted Fredrick’s pass in
the end zone for a UWG
touchback.
The Wolves made
good on the turnover as
Brett Yenser led the team
80 yards down the field to
pay dirt.
The drive included
a 21 yard completion to
Holbrook and a screen
pass to Kennebrew that
he took 29 yards to the
1 yard line. A QB sneak
from Yenser made the
score 14-0.
The Weevils an
swered with a screen
pass that was good for 69
return home with a shot at post-season
feating the West Alabama
Tigers 3-0.
Even though the
Wolves had only lost one
match at home on the sea
son, the Tigers appeared
confident to make it a sec
ond loss at home for UWG.
UWA refused to go
away in the first game,
matching the Wolves every
step of the way. Every time
it appeared the Wolves
were going to pull away
and finish off UWA, they
rallied to keep it close.
The Tigers even tied the
game at 30 apiece, but the
Wolves were determined
to win and did just that by
scoring the final two points
of the game to win 32-30 in
a hard earned game one.
Even after the heart
breaking loss in game one
for the Tigers, they re
fused to go away and gave
the Wolves fits in the sec
ond game.
The Wolves held an
early two point lead at 8-6
when Siha Collins sparked
a run to give the Wolves
an 18-11 lead. The Tigers
fired back though, pulling
to within four points be
fore UWG would put them
away.
The Wolves went on
another tear, this time an
11 -3 run to finish off UWA
yards and a touchdown on
the first play of the next
drive.
The half ended with
the Wolves on top 14-7.
The Wolves began
the second half with a
three and out. But during
the punt return, the UAM
returner fumbled the ball
and West Georgia’s Kel
vin Ferrell recovered on
UAM’s 20.
That drive stalled on
the 1 yard line and Nick
Adams missed the 19
yard field goal attempt.
Later on, after a
failed UWG 4th down
conversion, the Weevils
got the ball on their side
of the field.
On the first play of
the UAM drive, Odell
Willis sacked Fredrick
for a 7 yard loss on Ist
and 15. UAM couldn’t
climb out of the 22 yard
hole and was forced to
punt.
The fourth quarter
began with a UWG three
and out. The next drive
for the Weevils went 10
plays and 57 yards for
a touchdown to tie the
score at 14-14.
The last 38 seconds
of regulation saw 2 turn
overs, one by each team.
On 2nd and 10, UWG
quarterback Ryan Poole’s
pass was deflected and
grabbed by a UAM de
fender.
With 14 seconds left,
the last play of regulation
was a UAM screen pass
that was fumbled by the
running back and recov
ered by UWG.
The Wolves got the
in game two by a score of
30-18.
Even with a two
game disadvantage, the
Tigers refused to bow out
and kept things close in an
attempt to force a fourth
game. The Wolves were
just too much though,
winning the third and final
game 30-26 en route to
taking the match 3-0.
After the win things
did not get any easier for
the Wolves as they traveled
to Montevallo, Ala. for a
huge match with Monteval
lo. The Wolves entered the
contest riding the wave of a
five game winning streak.
Early on the Wolves
appeared poised to extend
the winning streak to six
games by taking game
one by a score of 30-23.
However, that was all the
Wolves would manage to
win as Montevallo took
the next three games to
win the match 3-1.
After losing game two
30-24 and game three 30-
lb, the Wolves fought hard
in game four in an effort to
force a decisive fifth game
but it was not enough as
Montevallo finished off
the Wolves 33-31.
After the loss the
Wolves season record fell
to 15-13 on the season and
ball on UAM's 25 to be
gin overtime. The drive
ended on 4th and 25 as
Poole’s pass was inter
cepted in the end zone.
UAM’s drive ended
on 4th and 24 as Fredrick
was forced to throw the
ball out of the end zone to
end the first overtime.
The Weevils got the
ball to begin the second
overtime. The drive be
gan with UWG’s Jonah
Katende and John Perkins
hitting the Weevil running
back to force a fumble that
UAM recovered.

4-6 in Gulf South Con
ference play. The Wolves
will play their final home
game of the season tomor
row night against GSC
foe Alabama-Huntsville
at 7 p.m.
UAH is currently
just one game back of the
Wolves with a conference
mark of 4-7.
The game is a must
win if the Wolves are to
return to the post-season.
John Perkins made the
defensive play of the
night as he intercepted
the young quarterback’s
throw to end UAM’s
drive.
All the Wolves need
ed was a field goal to win
the game. UWG running
back James Kennebrew
had other plans.
The second play of
the drive Kennebrew got
the hand off from Yenser
and took it 27 yards to the
corner of the end zone for
the win.
With UWG’s defense
only giving up 183 pass
The Wolves have lost
only one match at home
this season, which came
on October 3 against West
Florida. The Wolves lost
in five games, 3-2.
Last year, UWG went
21-18 and finished in fourth
place in the GSC East.
The Wolves are cur
rently in fourth place
again in the GSC East and
will need to hold on to
that spot in order to make
ing yards, they became
the top team in the confer
ence in passing defense.
The Wolves will look
to get win number two as
they will host Delta State
(6-2, 4-1) this Satur
day night at Carrollton's
Grisham Stadium.
The Statesman are
ranked 15th in the nation
and are second in the GSC
in pass offense, pass de
fense and scoring defense.
