South Hampton University,
saidthisexplanation “seemed
to me and my colleagues
to be the most scientifically
credible hypothesis.” The
"wick effect” proposes that
in rare incidents, the human
body can bum like a candle.
However, this theory was
disputed because of the
amount of time the body had
to be burned to achieve total
cremation, a period of 7 to
10 hours. This does not seem
plausible based on the case
tiles of victims who lived
m apartments, where the
next door neighbors were at
home, and reported the fires
quickly.
The FBI has had many
investigations into cases
involving spontaneous
human combustion,
including the case of a
Mrs. Mary Hardy Reeser
on July 2, 1951. The
official website, foia.fbi.
com, states that the victim,
who was 67 years old,
was completely cremated
except for her left foot.
Wall switches in the room
were melted, but floor
plug-ins were not harmed.

the bed was completely
burned except for two of
the feet. The FBI reported
that the victim’s skull had
shrunk to the size of a
teacup. They also reported
that lab examinations
revealed no signs of any
oxidizing chemicals,
petroleum hydrocarbons,
or other substances used
to initiate or accelerate
combustion.
A more popular case
of spontaneous human
combustion is the comic
btxik legend of Ghost Rider,
otherwise known as Johnny
Blaze. In the upcoming
movie Ghost Rider, Nicolas
Cage portrays the man who
sacrificed his soul to the devil
to save another, and in return
has to become "the rider”
every night.
The Marvel character
had his small time debut
in 1973, written by
Roy Thomas and Gary
Freidrich, along with artist
Mike IMoog, according to
squidoo.com/ghostrider.
The character’s popularity
resulted its’ow n series from
1973-1983. Ghost Rider's
distinguishing features are
a motorcycle, a chain w hip,
and of course, his body is
on tire. This comic book
icon only generated more
curiosity behind the myth
of spontaneous human
combustion, bringing it
into the mainstream.
So what’s to blame
for a body simply burning
to bits? In Ghost Rider’s
case, the devil is the culprit.
However, for those of us
who are not Johnny Blaze,
the origin is more elusive.
Some people argue that the
devil is to blame for real
life cases of spontaneous
human combustion, though
it is unclear if they are Ghost
Rider enthusiasts. Others
argue that the personal
irresponsibility or an
arsonist may be to blame.
Whatever the case,
the bizarre incidents
of spontaneous human
combustion are rare and
puzzling. It is commonly
know n that the human body
can reach high temperatures,
which can be very destructive
if not taken care of properly.
Ihetruecauseof spontaneous
human combustion may
never be known, but there is
one sure way to avoid being
a victim. Do not. under any
circumstances, sell your soul
to the devil.

Though it is

The FDA suggests
replacing trans fats
with unsaturated fats
