Summer
game
OUTLOOK
Another school
year is quickly coming
to an end and, for most
people, this festive
finale of countless
exams and papers can
only lead to many
enjoyable summer plans.
Whether it is hitting up
the favored vacationing
spots, catching up on
missed movies, or
just recuperating with
friends that time forgot;
summer is always a
great escape to do the
things we never seem to
have time for during the
semester.
This is especially
true for gamers looking
to complete those
overlooked games
stacked on the TV stand
or others in search
of some new virtual
excitement to flee the
summer heat. For those
readers in need, here is
a small helpful list of
new releases for this
summer.

Mario Party 8
Nintendo Wii
As hard as it is
to believe that Mario
is already on the Bth
installment of rocking
living rooms with his
popular board game
series, it is even harder
to believe that this latest
installment of Mario
Party is shaping up to the
best yet without running
out of ideas and fun.
Using the Nintendo
Wii’s ability to play
games using motion
sensing controls, Mario
Party 8 will fully utilize
this technology to engage
players with numerous
mini-games that the
series is so celebrated for.
On top of a completely
new way to experience
the gameplay, Mario
Party also includes 100
brand new mini-games
to discover and master.
Adding on to the
already impressive
roster set in previous
installments, Mario Party
8 is set to have a total
of fourteen selectable
characters, six brand new
game boards, and twelve
all new modes to try.
This additional material
is bound to keep even
the most devoted partiers
happy while keeping the
tried and true gameplay
fresh.
Look forward to
partying hard with
Mario and friends on the
Nintendo Wii come May
29th.

Sim City DS
Nintendo DS
Much like virtual
board game fans,
simulation game fans
can also look forward to
summer and rejoice. The
one and only original city
building game, Sim City,
is on the horizon for
release on the Nintendo
DS.
Taking advantage
of the Nintendo DS’
touch screen capability,
Sim City DS is sure
to put an incredible
amount of ease back
onto constructing and
managing your very
own city. Being able
to build and destruct
buildings at the touch of
a stylus and using both
screens to micromanage
information and statistics
certainly makes any
other form of Sim City
seem almost primitive.
With three modes of
play and an absolutely
endless amount of
possible city variations,
Sim City DS is sure to
make handhelds owners
very happy when it
becomes much too
humid to erect real life
buildings.
Sim City DS will be
constructing its way into
gamers’ hearts on June
19th.

'Small Framed Boy'' de
livers big town sound
By Bobby Moore

Out of all of the
local bands I have seen
or worked with. Small
Framed Boy is one of
my favorites.
After seeing the
band perform four limes
this year, including a
lengthy road trip last
Friday, I’m still not
tired of hearing them
yet because they keep
outdoing themselves.
Guitarist and
vocalist Jennie Castillo
provides lyrics that range
from being haunting
to amusing. Adam
Bruneau is the king of
improvisation on drums,
while Amanda Boyd
adds the life rhythm to
his heartbeat.
On their MySpace
page (http://www\
myspace.com/
smallframedboy), the
Atlanta-based trio
describe themselves as
“Beautifully primal, yet
unpredictable.”
That’s as good a
description as you are
going to find of Small
Framed Boy’s chaotically
beautiful sound.
I first caught the
band on the closing
night of Ladyfest South
on January 28.
The entire event
was entertaining, as
Using all the powers
of Jackie Estacado

envelops him. players
are able to do all sorts of
neat abilities in the dark.
Things like creating
monstrous tentacles
that can rip enemies
to ribbons, releasing
sentient imps to do
your bidding, or using
any weapon that Jackie
can produce from the
Darkness are all at
gamers’ disposal.
Fans of the comic
series, and others just
looking for a solid
first-person shooter,
will assuredly find
The Darkness a unique
gaming experience on
their home consoles.

way into stores on June

Tomb Raider: Anniversary

Last, but certainly
not least, on the list
everything from hippies
to hip hop to erotic
poetry was on display,
but Small Framed Boy
was definitely the
highlight of the night for
me.
Throughout their
lengthy set, a projector

seemed to go right along
with the music, proving

On February 17,
the band played at New

Itt
for promising summer
games is the reinvention
of the classic adventure
game that won over so
many a young males’
hearts back in the day.
Or perhaps that was the
series’ title character,
Lara Croft, which did
that.
While recreating
Lara’s first adventure
could be considered
borderline blasphemous
in some gamers’ eyes,
it s recreating the famous
Play Station game with
the use of the immensely
improved Tomb Raider;
Legend engine that
makes it well worth the
pardon of nostalgia.
Using the vastly
improved controls and
action gameplay of the
Legend engine while
fondly remembering
and recreating the first
time a bear chased Miss
Croft through the rocky
undergrounds of Peru
w ill surely be enough for
some players to pledge
themselves to the new
portable action game on
the Sony PSP.
Don’t forget to
celebrate the anniversary
of Lara Croft and her
tomb raiding on June
26th.

I got to see the band
again, unfortunately,
but w hen I did get to see
them at A Capella Books
on March 21, it was
certainly memorable.
Even if you
haven't heard the
band before, words
like “experimental”
and “unpredictable”
probably don’t evoke
images of an acoustic
set.
Well, that’s what
this show was.
