UWG Wolves football victorious in season opener

Many teams struggle
when faced with adversity.
After a tumultuous year last
season and losing most of
their starters on defease.
West Georgia was picked
to finish ninth in the Gulf
South Conference. However,
the Wolves put last season
behind them and defeated
Clark Atlanta 23-11 to win the
season opener on the road.
Facing the top ranked
defense in the nation. West
Georgia’s offensive line
had a hard time containing
star defensive end Curtis
Johnson. Unfortunately, the
Panthers offense had an even

The West Georgia
volleyball team started
the season off on a
bad note, losing their
first two matches to
Midwestern State and
Southern Indiana at
the University of West
Florida Field House.
However, the team
worked hard to get
things in order and are
now back on track.
Coming from
behind, the Wolves
defeated Flagler 3-2
and Wheeling Jesuit 3-
1 to close the weekend
with a 2-2 record. Head
coach Regan Adams
shook up the lineup
and the Wolves excelled
after the change.
In the first game,
outside hitter Andressa
Martins led the team with
18 kills and had 24 kills

advantage and continued to
capitalize on Clark Atlanta’s
mistakes.
The Wolves relied on an
impressive defensive effort to
control the game, forcing six
fumbles and recovering four.
Head coach Mike
Ledf ord was impressed by the
performance of his defense.
“I am happy about our
defensive effort,” Ledford
said. “They were pushed and
bent a lot tonight, but they
responded and forced a ton of
turnovers, which really helped
our football team out.”
Last season, the Wolves
struggled offensively and their
first offensive touchdown
didn’t come until the third
game of the year. However,
with just under 10 minutes in
in the second contest,
with only six errors.

finished the second game
with 19 kills, her highest
of the season.
Getting an early
region win against
the game, quarterback Keats
Baldwin connected with
Jimmy Howard on a 23-yard
touchdown pass.
Baldwin was solid going
14-of-28 for 220 yards in the
contest. He found Howard
four times for 121 yards and
two touchdowns, and hooked
up with Patrick Higgins five
times for 81 yards.
“We still have a long way
to go in our passing game,”
Ledford said. “We had a few
dry spots in the second half,
but overall 1 was pleased with
our first night out.”
Handling the kicking
duties for the game was
Jared Guberman. He played
excellent for the Wolves
and gave the special teams a
huge advantage. Gubemian
averaged 44.9 yards per punt
Albany State, the Wolves
salvaged their bad start
and continued to increase
their record. During the
four-game span, outside
hitter Martins was
named to the All-
Tournament team for
her great performance.
Moreover, the team
carried the momentum
from the previous
tournament and swept
the Francis Marion
Invitational. The
Wolves completed the
sweep with a pair of
3-0 victories. Martins
and Schoeneck were
named to the All-
Tournament team.
The Wolves will
compete in the West
Georgia Classic
Tournament this
weekend. They will
challenge Fort Valley
State,Christian Brothers,
and Saint Andrews, and
hope to continue their
winning streak.

dominated in the kicking
game tonight,” Ledford said.
“I can’t say enough about
Jared, he did an outstanding
job for us and was a major
difference in the game."
Clark Atlanta made a
small run in the fourth quarter,
but an offside penalty gave
the Wolves a free play where
Baldwin luxrked up with
Howard again for a 66-yard
touchdown pass to clinch the
victory.
With a 1 -0 record to start
the season, the Wolves will
go on the mad to challenge
Georgia Southern Saturday at
6 pjn. The home opener will
be played on Sept. 15 against
Arkansas Tech.
