Grisham Stadium should be packed for Homecoming

It is well known
that West Georgia sports
teams don’t receive nearly
the amount of fan support
that they should. More
specifically, the football
team does not attract many
students to the game.
Some of the reasons
are due to the poor
record, location of the
stadium (Carrollton High
School), and the amount
of students who go home
on the weekend. These
factors should not keep

When a team is on
a winning streak, they
immediately become
targets for opposing teams.
The Wolves went into
their home game against
West Florida with great
confidence; however. West
Georgia had a bull’s eye
on their backs entering
the game with a 17-match
winning streak.

Nevertheless, the
team should have the same
fan support regardless of
how many games they
have won over the past
few years. The first three
games of the season have
benefited the Wolves
tremendously, after fans
traveled to Clark Atlanta
and Georgia Southern to
support West Georgia in
big numbers.
However, the
losing has begun for the
Wolves, and they have
fallen to 1-3 after a huge
loss on the road. They
Wolves were unable to
maintain the streak, losing
3-2 to the Argonauts, who
were on a six game winning
streak themselves.
West Georgia started
of; strong, taking an early
3-1 lead in the game.
Having control early
caused the Wolves to
get comfortable, which
allowed the Argonauts to
come back and take the
first game 30-20.
In the second game,
the Wolves put on the
pressure and jumped to
return home Saturday for
Homecoming to face Gulf
South Conference foe
Henderson State. This is
a good time to show the
Wolves the most support,
when they are struggling.
Many people ask the
question, “How can the
students of the University
of West Georgia be
prepared for anew 9,000-
seat stadium when they
can’t support their team at
Grisham Stadium?”
Albeit, the players
and coaching staff should
work harder to win more
games, the fans should
hold up their end of the
an early lead, but they
allowed West Florida to
catch back up. However,
the momentum changed in
the Wolves favor as they
trailed, but outscored the
Argonauts 7-1 to tie the
score. They went on to w in
34-32 to even the score.
After winning the
third match and taking a 2-
1 lead, the Wolves thought
they had the game wrapped
up and were ready to finish
the Argonauts off, but West
Florida remained focused
and won two straight
deal and support the team
regardless of the wins
and losses. Many people
are not aware of the huge
changes the University is
trying to make in order to
make West Georgia a first
tier school. People also fail
to realize that athletics is a
factor in these changes.
Changes must first
happen in the classroom,
but having a successful
athletic program is also
essential in helping the
school receive money
from the community and
recruit talented players.
If the school wants to
move to Division I, the
matches decisively to
snap the Wolves winning
streak.
The Wolves were led
by Jordan McDonald, who
collected 17 kills. Andressa
Martins had 13 kills
and Carolin Schoeneck
followed with 11.
West Georgia falls to
17-3 and 1-1 in the Gulf
South Conference. West
Georgia will take on GSC
opponent West Alabama on
Friday, September 28th at
the HPF2 Building/Campus
Center.
