A professor here at
the University of West
Georgia received the
birthday gift of a lifetime
on Sept. 19,2007.
Many organizations
from UWG united to
honor Dr. Said Sewell
with a recognition
ceremony in light of his
accomplishments and the
multiple contributions he
has bestowed upon the
university.
Sewell’s work has
been stationed at UWG
for six years. His
previous employment
was at Albany University
in the political science
field. He was then
offered a job as a visiting
professor at UWG for
one year. The chair at
the time was Dr. Clark,
who invited Sewell to
teach several courses.
Sewell originally
had no obligations to
stay at West Georgia, but
after meeting with the
optimistic faculty and
students of UWG, his
interest in this pristine
institution piqued, and
he eagerly transferred his
work to West Georgia.
While at West
Georgia, Dr. Sewell
started the Black Males
With Initiative (BMW 1)
program with an ideal
Local man arrested after
bragging of robberies

After bragging about
how many banks he
had robbed, Brian Keith
Starnes, 32, of Carrollton
was arrested on Sept. 14.
Starnes was
confronted while
accompanying a woman
to Tanner Medical Center
when one of the nurses
there reported that the
couple was acting “very
strange” and suspected a
domestic issue.
The nurse told them
that she was calling the
police, to which Starnes
replied, “I am wanted for
bank robbery and if police
come I will spend
the rest of my life in
prison.”
The nurse then
reported that he
bragged about the
number of banks he
robbed.
When the deputy
arrived, Starnes was
in his car and the
goal to develop a 21st
Century generation
of African American
leaders.
The program works
to promote and ignite
success within African
American males of all
ages, by reaching out to
them on an interpersonal
level.
According to Sewell,
studies show that African
American males begin to
drop out of school in the
ninth grade. The BMWI
program encourages
these students to stay in
school and to get involved
with community service
activities.
The organization
also functions to supply
selected first-year African
American men with
significant leadership and
success skills. Though
BMWI is one of Sewell’s
most recognizable
contributions to West
Georgia, it is not the only
benefit that he has given
the university.
Sewell is also the
advisorofa newly created
chapter of the National
Association for the
Advancement of Colored
People, and he has a
leadership position in
the active Martin Luther
Kind Jr. Distinguished
Lecture Series here on
campus.
Itisbecause of Sewell
that inspirational speakers
deputy asked him to
come sort things out back
in the hospital. A check
revealed a warrant from
the marshal’s office, and
when the deputy tried to
arrest Starnes, he allegedly
swung at him. Starnes
continued to fight the
deputy even after being
tasered, and eventually
two hospital security
guards had to assist in the
arrest.
Starnes was charged
with felony obstruction
and probation violation.
According to the Carroll
County Sheriff’s Office,
Starnes had a warrant from
the U.S. Marshal’s Office
for violation of probation
after a bank robbery.

Yet, in light of
everything Sewell has
brought to West Georgia,
he never suspected that
the university may give
him something in return.
On Sept. 19 Sewell
thought that he was just
going to eat with his
fellow BMWI members.
Imagine his surprise when
he reached the Campus

p.m., only to find several

Sept. 14 was a day
for all horror fanatics
to remember. Fans
of Georgia’s haunted
attraction. Camp Blood,
are more than excited to
learn of its on-schedule
opening.
“The site is ready, the
monsters are prepared,
and it’s time to begin
the year,” Camp Blood
Administrator Mark
Atcheson said.
Unlike other
attractions of the sort, the
guides at Camp Blood
take groups of visitors
through a ‘quarter mile
of sheer terror’. Visitors
find themselves walking,
stopping, screaming,
running, and cowering
as they attempt to keep
up with their shifty tour
guides and evade the
monsters.
Camp Blood will be
taking its horrortoa whole
new level with its newest
edition, The Mabel’s

tentative consideration
to have a street named
after him as well.
Sewell said that he
was very surprised and
humbled by the event.
