RECIPIENT OF GOLD MEDAL OF EXCELLENCE
THE RIGHT REVEREND JUDE CLEARY, O.S.B.
Born in Savannah, Georgia, May 23, 1926, the son of the late George Joseph and
Annie Travers Cleary, he attended the parochial school of Sacred Heart Parish in that
city from first through the ninth grades, and attended Benedictine Military School in
Savannah, where he graduated in June, 1944, after serving the senior year as the Cadet
Lieutenant Colonel in the Cadet Corps.
After serving in the Air Force Aviation Cadet Program during the latter part of
World War II, he was discharged and enrolled in the Mechanical Engineering
Department>of the Georgia Institute of Technology in January, 1945.
As a freshman student at Georgia Tech, he was elected to Phi Eta Sigma honor
society, and as a senior engineering student, elected to membership in Pi Tau Sigma
(Mechanical Engineering Honor Society), Tau Beta Pi (Engineering Honor Society),
and Phi Kappa Phi (Scholastic Honor Society).
He was graduated from Georgia Tech in June, 1949, with the degree of Bachelor of
Mechanical Engineering. The following sixteen months were spent in business and
part-time high school teaching in his own high school in Savannah.
In October, 1950, he went to Belmont Abbey where he completed the novitiate and
was simply professed as a Benedictine Monk in November, 1951.
As a graduate student in the Belmont Abbey Seminary, he served as part-time
instructor in Math and Engineering Drawing in the prep school and the College.
He was ordained to the Catholic priesthood in June, 1956. He continued to teach
Math, was Chaplain one year, and Academic Dean PRO TEMPORE, beginning
January, 1959. He became Registrar in March, 1961, and, in addition, Coordinator of
Development. The physical expansion at Belmont Abbey College is due in large part to
his direction. He was appointed President of Belmont Abbey College, May 24, 1967.
In August, 1970, he was succeeded in the College presidency by the Rev. John P.
Bradley. He then served as Assistant to the President of the College until July, 1975,
when he was elected Fifth Abbot of Belmont Abbey by the monks of Belmont. The
election was confirmed by the Vatican on November 4,1975, and the formal blessing
was conferred on December 19,1975.
His family includes two brothers, William and Bernard, one a merchant and the
other a public relations man, both of Savannah. The Cleary family is unique in that
each of the boys was Cadet Lieutenant Colonel in the Benedictine Military School
Cadet Corps.
