Hospital Installs Officers; Honor Volunteers
Mrs. A. Dudley Wall, Jr. was installed
president of Augusta’s St. Joseph
Hosptial Auxiliary at the annual spring
meeting and luncheon held at the home
of Mrs. Gary Dorn. Other officers
installed by Mrs. Hinton A. Owens were
Mrs. R. J. Courville, President-Elect,
Mrs. Frank L. Lathan, Secretary and
Mrs. Alfred T. Cole, Treasurer.
The out-going president Mrs. James
R. Holley was presented with an
engraved silver tray and the past
president’s pin.
It was reported at the meeting that
15,997 hours of service was given by the
182 active members from May 11,1975
to April 15,1976.
AQUINAS
Students Honored
Aquinas High School’s 19th Class
night honored outstanding graduates at
Bell Auditorium by citing academic
honors as well as civic and service
achievements.
Valedictorian, Donna Wilds,
Salutatorian, Anne Marie Markwalter,
Highest average in academic subjects:
English, Donna Wilds, mathematics,
Anne Marie Markwalter, Science, Anne
Marie Markwalter, foreign languages,
Donna Wilds, history, Cheryl Lowry,
typing, Julie Graham.
National Honor Society Gold Cord
Honors: Mary Kay Blithe, Beth
Brotherton, Laura Christian, Natalie
Cullum, Sophie Dean, Debbie Hudson,
Kathy Hughes, Cheryl Lowry, Anne
Marie Markwalter, Mark von Plinsky,
Linda Rockholt, Donna Wilds, and Mary
Williams.
Academic Scholarships were awarded
to Anne Marie Markwalter from the
College of Charlestown, Sophie Dean,
Exchange Club Scholarship to Augusta
College, William Rhodes, Atheletic
Scholarship to Presbyterian College,
Charles Vaughn, Dupont Scholarship to
Morehouse College, and an Academic
Scholarship to Tuskeegee Institute, Paul
Davis, appointment to the U.S. Military
Academy at West Point.
Certificate of merit awards include
the National Merit Scholarship Program
to John Danner, the Georgia
Association of Independent Schools for
work in art to Mark Scott, the Betty
Crocker Search for Leadership in
Family Living to Jean Gambill, Augusta
College for participation in mathematics
contest to Paul Davis and Mary
Williams, the Bicentennial Seniors
Program to Charles Wame, the Ga.
Literary Competition first place region
award in boys’ solo Gerald McClerklin,
the Georgia High School Literary
Competition 2nd place in Girls’ Essay to
Beth Brotherton.
Aquinas’ most prestigious award, the
Christian Service Plaque was awarded to
Ruth Shuford and Jon Ledbetter. Other
service and civic awards were: Volunteer
Library Service, Claire Brooks and
Angelika Selman; Rev. Ralph E. Seikel
Medal for Most School Spirit, Debbie
Pinkerton and Philip Kelly; Dr. Emile
Hummel Memorial Medal for Best
Student Athlete, William Rhodes, and a
tie between Maureen Mulherin and
Lynn Rachels; First National Bank
C.A.R. Award (Children of American
Revolution), Cora Van Keruon; Frontier
Organization of America Award to
William Rhodes; The Augusta Chapter
of the Georgia Society of Professional
Engineers to Anne Marie Markwalter.
Underclassmen Awards for the
highest class average went to Natasha
Fox, junior; Barbara Parson,
sophomore; and Ann Beier, freshman.
For punctual and regular attendance
during the senior year, certificates went
to David Conley, Vivian Jackson,
Edward Riley, Jr., Mark Scott, Marjorie
Whigham, and Donna Wilds.
ACADEMIC HONORS -- At Class Night Exercises of Augusta’s Aquinas
High School, Academic Honors were awarded to seniors (left to right)
Julie Graham, typing; Cheryl Lowry, history; Anne Marie Markwalter,
mathematics and science; and Donna Wilds, English and foreign language.
Pins were presented for hours of
volunteer service at the hospital by
Hospital Administrator William S.
Atkinson. Mrs. Hinton A. Owens
received a pin for 3,000 hours. Mrs.
James R. Holley and Miss Louise
Armstrong received pins for 1,000
hours. Receiving pins for 500 hours
were Mrs. Nelson Bowick, Mrs. Hugh O.
Busbia, Mrs. Walter Czura, and Mrs.
Lloyd S. Scott. 100 hour pins were
given to Mrs. R. T. Coffer, Mrs. W. W.
Doughty, Mrs. Lynn Drumond, Mrs.
C.V.D. Durand Jr., Mrs. LeGrande
Flake, Mrs. W. B. Hawkins, Mrs. F. L.
Lathan, Mrs. R. S. Magruder, and Mrs.
C. R. Menger, and Mrs. M. J. O’Brien.
Three new pieces of equipment were
presented to the nursery department
during the year, two portable
transporters and an Ohio Medical
Isolation Incubator, from the Auxiliary.
Three charter members of the
auxiliary were honored guest, Mrs. May
Clare Mulherin, Mrs. Eileen Stulb, and
Mrs. Eulalia Mulherin.
BEST ATHLETES - Maureen Mulherin, William Rhodes, Lynn Rachels
are receipients of the Dr. Emile Hummel Memorial Medal for best Student
Athlete at Class Night Exercises of Augusta’s Aquinas High School at Bell
Auditorium. The two girls tied, and are sharing the honor. Decision is by
faculty vote, according to the following: Participation in Varsity Sports
for two years at Aquinas, boys must participate in more tiian one sport,
candidates must be passing all subjects.

awarded each year to the boy and
the girl who shows leadership in a
Christian way. Criteria are:
Christian social action in helping
others, service at Aquinas
functions, participation in parish
activities, good attitude toward
authorities and peers,
conscientious effort in the
classroom, and leadership.
