Christians, whose communities
may lack one or more of the means
of salvation abundantly present in
the Catholic Church, may make
greater use of them in their jour

communion, “no other sign of rever
ence” is required (see both instruc
tions mentioned above). Where the
communicants stand for commun
ion, as in this country, what “suit
able reverence” should they make?
The novel practice of genuflecting
in the communion line, or kneeling
for the reception of Holy
Communion where the approved
practice to stand, is not allowed. It
has never been customary in the
Roman rite to genuflect in proces
sion, that is, to interrupt the forward
movement of the procession with a
genuflection. In the old rite, when
celebrated before the Blessed
Sacrament, the priest genuflected at
the end of the procession, but not
during it. The Ceremonial of
Bishops states: “Those who pass
before the Blessed Sacrament genu
flect, except when they are walking
in procession.” There is simply too
much danger in trying to bend the
knee while gravity is carrying one
forward. It is not traditional, but is
dangerous and, again, perhaps
indicative of some defiance of the
community’s customs and the
Church’s regulations. The “suitable

munion, in places where standing is
the norm, would seem to be a bow
of the head or the sign of the cross.
This perspective is at variance
with the contemporary American
ethos, that places a premium on self-
expression. But the celebration of
Mass is more than a moment of self-
expression. At its deepest level, it is
an expression of the communion of
saints, praising and thanking the
God of all creation, by offering in
the Spirit the Eucharist that Jesus
left us “as an everlasting covenant.”
