direction and/or retreats.
Ms. Rowe noted that every
Formation for Ministry Program
session includes a half-hour to 45
minutes of “faith-sharing and ‘reak-
ing open the Gospel,’ telling our
stories as they relate to the Gospel.”
“Spiritual formation is the core,”
says Rowe. “It’s a huge mistake if
you focus only on academics.”

And now RU-486—the first drug
to be approved by the FDA to kill a
human being. A most chilling
observation about the psychologi
cal aspects of RU-486 was made by
Edouard Sakiz, former chair of the
company that invented the drug,
Roussel-Uclaf. “RU-486 is not easy
to use ... a woman who wants to
end her pregnancy has to ‘live’
with her abortion for at least a
week using this technique. It’s an
appalling ordeal”.

Isn’t it time that Catholics act
together to overthrow the culture of
death that has been visited upon
our children and us? Our Bishops
issued an excellent teaching last
year titled Faithful Citizenship:
Civic Responsibility for a New
Millennium.
In it, they synthesize four moral
priorities for public life—
Protecting Human Life, Promoting
Family Life, Pursuing Social
Justice and Practicing Global
Solidarity. All four are interdepend
ent. But it is abundantly clear that
if the Human Life priority is not
fulfilled, history has shown that
power brokers and politicians can
readily manipulate all the other pri
orities.
The elections are upon us. We
need to place Protecting Human
Life as our first moral priority and
on top of our list when we vote. We
don’t need to elect people who pro
mote RU-486. We don’t need
politicians who will require the
next three or four Justices of the
Supreme Court to sustain partial-
birth abortion.
Each of us can help right the
wrongs of the past by taking our
Faith seriously. If the majority of
Catholics act to uphold our
Church’s teachings, we will soon
be able to create a culture of life. It
is urgent that all parishes get the
message across of the great need of
today, tomorrow and forever—the
need for Faithful Citizenship with a
top priority of Protecting Human
Life.
