Secular Franciscan fraternity reactivated in Macon
A means of following Franciscan spirituality is
now available to Catholics living in the Macon
Area. A Secular Franciscan Order Fraternity,
under the patronage of Saint Benedict the Moor,
has recently been officially re-activated. It meets at
Holy Spirit Church, Macon, once a month.
Members of the SFO do not take vows, but make
promises to follow the Gospel values as expressed
in the Rule of Saint Francis. A new Rule was
approved in 1978 by Pope Paul VI. It reflects the
task of the universal Church in the modem world
and brings the spirit of Saint Francis to bear in a
creative way on the world today. This Rule invites
the Secular Franciscan to become a leaven of the

to all refugees who hold a well-found
ed fear of persecution in their home
lands. (We also call for) a more gener
ous immigration and refugee policy
based on providing temporary or per
manent safe haven for those in need;
protecting immigrant workers from
exploitation; promoting family reunifi
cation; safeguarding the right of all
peoples to return to their homelands;
ensuring that public benefits and a fair
and efficient process for obtaining cit
izenship are available to immigrants;
Gospel in today’s world and to take part in its
transformation into the Kingdom proclaimed by
Jesus.
Saint Benedict the Moor Fraternity was originally
canonically established on March 28, 1965, in
Albany. On March 10, 1985, it transferred its meet
ing place to Saint Theresa’s Church, Cordele, and
met there officially for the last time in 1992.
The reactivation was brought about by Deacon
Dennis Arcand of Sacred Heart Church, Warner
Robins, a professed member of the SFO, who had
been inactive for many years. On June 10, 2000, a
meeting was held at Holy Spirit to discern whether
to reactivate the Fraternity. Father Sam Zebron,
OFM Conventual, pastor, will be the Fraternity’s
Spiritual Assistant.
Membership in the SFO is open to men and
women, age 18 and older (single, married, separat
ed, divorced), who have recognized their vocation
to the Franciscan Family, and strive to achieve
holiness in their lay state while bringing the gospel
message to the world through the example of their
lives.

Order, call 1-800-FRANCIS. You may also leave a

extending to immigrants the full pro

root causes of migration.
MARRIAGE
Marriage as God intended it pro
vides the basic foundation for family
life and needs to be protected in the
face of the many pressures working
to undermine it. Tax, workplace,
divorce and welfare policies must be
designed to help families stay togeth
er and to reward responsibility and
sacrifice for children.
REGIONAL CONFLICTS
We urge the United States to pur
sue ... an affirmative role, in collabo
ration with the international commu
nity, in addressing regional conflicts
from the Middle East and the
Balkans, to Africa, Colombia and
East Timor. Assistance in resolving
these conflicts must include a will
ingness to support international
peacekeeping, as well as long-term
post-conflict reconstruction efforts.

UNITED NATIONS
We urge ... more consistent finan
cial and diplomatic support for the
United Nations, other international
bodies and international law, so that
these institutions may become more
effective, responsible and responsive
agents for addressing global prob
lems.
VIOLENCE
Concern about violence leads us to
promote a greater sense of moral
responsibility, to advocate a reduc
tion in violence in the media, to sup
port gun safety measures and reason
able restrictions on access to assault
weapons and hand guns, and to
oppose the death penalty.
WEAPONS
We urge our nation to join the
treaty to ban anti-personnel land
mines and to promptly ratify the
Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty as a
step toward much deeper cuts in and
the eventual elimination of nuclear
weapons. We further urge our nation
to take more serious steps to reduce
its own disproportionate role in the
scandalous global trade in arms,
which contributes to violent conflicts
around the world.
WELFARE REFORM
Efforts to provide for the basic
financial needs of poor families and
children must enhance their lives and
dignity. The goal should be reducing
poverty and dependency, not simply
cutting resources and programs. We
seek approaches that promote greater
responsibility and offer concrete
steps to help families leave poverty
behind. Recent attempts to reform the
welfare system have focused on pro
viding productive work and training,
mostly in low-wage jobs. Until new
workers find jobs that pay a living
wage, they will need other forms of
support including tax credits, health
care, child care, and safe, affordable
housing.
