Most Rev. Gerald P. O’Hara,
D.D.
Ninth Bishop of Savannah
(1935-1959)
ERALD PATRICK O’HARA
was bom in Green Ridge, Penn
sylvania, on May 4, 1895, and was
ordained a priest for the Archdiocese
of Philadelphia at the Pontifical
Roman Seminary on April 3, 1920.
On April 26, 1929, Father O’Hara
was appointed Titular Bishop of
Heliopolis and Auxiliary Bishop of
Philadelphia and was consecrated on
May 20, 1929. He was appointed
ninth Bishop of Savannah on Novem
ber 16, 1935. On November 11, 1959,
Archbishop O’Hara resigned the See
of Savannah. He was appointed
Titular Archbishop of Pessinus. Arch
bishop O’Hara died in London, as
Apostolic Delegate, on July 16, 1963.
Most Rev. Thomas J.
McDonough, D.D.
Tenth Bishop of Savannah
(1960-1967)
HOMAS JOSEPH MCDO
NOUGH was bom on December
5, 1911, in Philadelphia. Father
McDonough was ordained a priest for
Archdiocese of Philadelphia on May
26, 1938. On March 10, 1947, he was
appointed Titular Bishop of Thaenae
and Auxiliary Bishop of St.
Augustine. He was consecrated on
April 30, 1947. On January 2, 1957,
he was transferred from St. Augustine
to Savannah as Auxiliary. He was
appointed tenth Bishop of Savannah
on March 2, 1960. On March 1, 1967,
he was appointed second Archbishop
of Louisville, resigning in 1981.
Archbishop McDonough died on
August 4, 1998, in Philadelphia.
Most Rev. Gerard L. Frey,
D.D.
Eleventh Bishop of Savannah
(1967-1972)
ERARD LOUIS FREY was
bom in New Orleans, Louisiana,
on May 10, 1914. He was ordained a
priest for Archdiocese of New
Orleans on April 2, 1938. He served
as a peritus (“expert”) during the
Second Vatican Council, one of only
four American pastors so honored.
On May 31, 1967, Monsignor Frey
was appointed eleventh Bishop of
Savannah. He was ordained a bishop
on August 8, 1967. Pope Paul VI
transferred Bishop Frey to Lafayette,
Louisiana, on November 7, 1972.
Bishop Frey resigned the See of
Lafayette on May 13, 1989. He now
lives in retirement at Bay St. Louis,
Mississippi, near New Orleans.

Lessard, D.D.
Twelfth Bishop of Savannah
(1973-1995)

XvSARD was bom in Grafton,
North Dakota on December 21, 1930.
He was ordained a priest for Diocese
of Fargo at the North American
College, Rome, on December 16,
1956. He served for a number of
years in the Vatican’s Congregation of
Bishops. On March 5, 1973, Pope
Paul VI appointed Msgr. Lessard
twelfth Bishop of Savannah. He was
ordained and installed as Bishop of
Savannah on April 27, 1973. Bishop
Lessard resigned the See of Savannah
on February 7, 1995. He now teaches
theology at Saint Vincent de Paul
Regional Seminary, Boynton Beach,
Florida.
