Seventy to receive new Bishop Gartland Award
By Barbara D. King
T hey led parish council meetings
and choirs. They helped with the
bookkeeping, repaired pews, taught
catechism and served as lectors.
They baked bread, swept floors, paid
the bills, directed the choir, and
locked and unlocked the doors of the
church. They put flowers on the altar,
took communion to shut-ins, and
gave rides to Mass. One took photos
of parish events and another served
by chronicling parish life through a
video lens.
But the chief way that all 70 peo
ple who will receive the new Bishop
Gartland Award at the Cathedral of
Saint John the Baptist on November
29 served the Church is through
quiet example.
Bishop J. Kevin Boland will be
stow the medal and certificate on the
70 recipients in a ceremony that
begins at 11:00 a.m. at the newly-
restored cathedral. A reception for
the honorees and their families will
follow the service at Sister Jude
Walsh Hall at Saint Vincent’s
Academy.
The award is named for Bishop
Francis X. Gartland, first bishop of
Savannah, who served from the estab
lishment of the Diocese of Savannah
in 1850 until his death from yellow
fever in 1854. He went from house to
house administering the sacraments to
victims of yellow fever until he was
struck down himself.
The gold and blue Gartland Award
pin combines the elements of Bishop
Gartland’s episcopal coat of arms with
elements from the shield of the
Diocese of Savannah. Bishop Gart
land’s motto, Vincit Veritas, or “Truth
conquers," is inscribed on the medal.
The men and women who will
receive the Gartland Award were
identified by their pastors as people
who have given outstanding service to
the Church community on the parish
or deanery level over an extended
period of time. They were also cited
for their faithfulness to their own
fields of expertise and work.
