Rt. Rev. Francis X. Gartland,
D.D.
First Bishop of Savannah
(1850-1854)
RANCIS XAVIER GARTLAND
was bom in Dublin, Ireland on
January 19, 1805. He was ordained a
priest in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, for
the Diocese of Philadelphia on
August 5, 1832. On July 23, 1850,
Pope Pius IX appointed Father
Francis X. Gartland first Bishop of
Savannah. He was consecrated on
November 10, 1850. The diocese at
that time covered all of Georgia and
much of Florida and contained 5,000
Catholics. Bishop Gartland died of
yellow fever in Savannah September
20, 1854.
Rt. Rev. John Barry, D.D.
Second Bishop of Savannah
(1857-1859)
J OHN BARRY was bom in
Oylegate parish, Co. Wexford,
Ireland in July 1799. He was ordained
priest on September 24, 1825, in
Charleston, SC, for the Diocese of
Charleston. When the Diocese of
Savannah was founded in 1850, Father
Barry was incardinated in the new dio
cese. On January 9, 1857, Pope Pius
IX appointed Father John Barry sec
ond Bishop of Savannah. He was con
secrated on August 2, 1857. Bishop
Barry died in Paris on November 21,
1859, while seeking financial support
and priests for the diocese in Europe.

D.D.
Third Bishop of Savannah
(1861-1870)
jEAN PIERRE AUGUSTIN MAR-
J CELLIN VEROT was bom in Le-
Puy, France, on May 23, 1805. He
was ordained a priest for the Diocese
of LePuy in 1828, for service with the
Society of Saint Sulpice. He came to
the United States to teach prospective
priests in 1830. On April 25, 1858,
Bishop Verot was consecrated as
Vicar Apostolic of Florida. On July
14, 1861, Pope Pius IX appointed him
the third bishop of Savannah and in
March 1870 transferred him to St.
Augustine as its first bishop. Bishop
Verot died there on June 10, 1976.

Fourth Bishop of Savannah
(1870-1872)
AMILLO WILLIAM MARY
PETER PERSICO was bom in
Naples, Italy, on January 30, 1823. He
entered the Capuchin Franciscans on
April 25, 1839, and was ordained as
Father Ignatius on July 14, 1846. On
March 8, 1854, he was consecrated
auxiliary bishop to the Vicar Apostolic
of Patna, India. On March 11, 1870,
Pope Pius IX appointed him fourth
Bishop of Savannah. He resigned in
1872 for reasons of health.
Archbishop Persico was created
Cardinal on January 16, 1893. He died
in Rome on December 7, 1895.
