White To Speak Peter C. White, Executive Secretary of Education For Freedom, will address the Saint Pius X Home & School Asso ciation on Monday, March 18, 1963 at 8 p.m. in the School Cafetorium. His topic will be "Freedom VS Communism". Education For Freedom which isja non-profit education al corporation attempts to in crease the understanding of Americans as to their free doms and deepen citizen know ledge of communism and the measures taken by the free world to defend against it. Mr. White is a native New Yorker and is a graduate of Fordham University. wave of resignations at the outset of its election campaign. Fifty members resigned en masse at Scafati in the pro vince of Salerno, and a wo man deputy from Bari, Ada Del Vecchio - Guelfi, also resigned, declaring that party leaders were acting "contrary to the interests of Italian work ers." THE BARI deputy also com plained that communist leaders had allied themselves withneo- Fascists and fought against the ruling Center - Left coalition "just as the conservative and reactionary forces fight it." Her resignation follows close upon two others defections from communist parliamentary ranks: Vincenzo Misefari and Giusepee Bufardeci. 'She has Much of the disatisfaction is ascribed to the party leader ship's decision to exclude all parliamentarians from the par ty's new election slate. TTie mass resignations at Scafati, for example, were prompted by the exclusion of Senator Aniello Capuano from the list of party candidates. Capuano was among those resigning. THE elections will be held on April 28. Some students of Communist party tactics in Italy interpret the latest purge of candidates as an attempt to liquidate the Stalinist "old guard" from the party. The purpose of this is to make the party's stance less fixed and more adaptable to the most important element in this nation's politics, the year- old Center-Left coalition known as "the opening to the Left.” "Ready with the paste, Homer?” NATION’S CAPITAL CLASSIFIED Churchmen Deplore Welfare Failings WASHINGTON (NC) —Inade quacies in the District of Columbia'a public welfare pro gram were termed a "tragic blot" on the nation's capital in a joint statement by eight Catholic, Protestant and Jew ish churchmen. The churchmen's statement deplored the fact "that our community has not seen fit to provide adequately for the ful fillment of the responsibility of government to the public welfare." "TO BE miserly or submini- mal in providing funds for the welfare program of our city is to serve poorly the cause of freedom and progress in our society," they said. The joint statement was signed by Archbishop Patrick A. O* Boyle of Washington; Epis copal Bishop William F. Crei-. ghton; Methodist Bishop John Wesley Lord; Rabbi Lewis A. Weintraub, president of the Washington Board of Rabbis; Rabbi Norman Gerstenfeld of the Washington Hebrew Congre gation; Rev. George M. Doch- erty, pastor of the New York Avenue Presbyterian church; Rev. Earl L. Harrison, pastor of Shiloh Baptist church; and Rev. David Colwell, pastor of the First Congregationalist church. THE CHURCHMEN con demned an attitude toward the poor which insists on "denoun cing them and applauding every effort to punish and humiliate." They said such an attitude is contrary to belief in man's dignity as a creature of God and stressed that welfare pro grams, public or private, "must endeavor to impart to those whom it serves a sense of dignity and self-respect." Declaring that "public wel fare is everybody's concern,", the churchmen described as "essential" a "sound and ade quately supported" public wel fare program for the nation's capital. My dear People: As soon as the census-cards have been programed and pro cessed, the results will be announced in our archdiocesan newspaper, THE GEORGIA BULLETIN. But now I want to thank heartily all of the 6,000 census- takers who did such an outstanding work, the parish captains and chairmen, and our priests - it was a big venture, calling for cooperation and zeal. To all of you, the thanks'bf the Arch diocese! To all the Protestant, Orthodox and Jewish clergymen who graciously announced our census at their services, and to all the newspapers, television and radio stations which helped make Georgia aware of the census - we are deeply appreciative. May God bless you, your homes and families. With every good wish. Archbishop of Atlanta OLDEST MEMBER Mary Boylan Cole Buried From Shrine Mrs. M. J.
