\ I GEORGIA BULLETIN THURSDAY APRIL 4, 1963 PAGE 7 THEOLOGIAN CHALLENGES Lay State Not Inferior To That Of Religious CLEVELAND—A Jesuit the ology professor has challenged the theory that the lay state is inferior to the religious life. Father John Gerken, S.J., of John Carroll University here, author of the book "Toward a Theology of the Layman," said laymen are not ungenerous when they embrace the lay state in obedience to God’s will. THE SIGNS of a layman's calling, he said—like the signs of a religious calling—are spiritual serenity, peace, and joy caused by the decision to serve God and fellow men in that state. Father Gerken holds that the lay and religious states of life do not represent different deg rees (superior and inferior) of the same attitude toward the world. They are "exlusively different attitudes toward the world" and cannot be set along side one another and compared. COGGINS SHOE STORE SHOES FOR THE FAMILY 46 W. PARK SQ. "It is not the state of those who are w illing to dally on the road to perfection and who do not take the more efficient means to holiness. Nor is it the state of those who want to divide their hearts between God and the world.” The laity, he said, are those whose honest answer is that God calls them to the lay state— not because they are less gen erous or in any way inferior, but because the lay state is their vocation, and there is divine work to be done which will go undone unless they do it. He added: "IF LAY people think they are ungenerous, second-rate Ch ristians, they are less likely to be holy Christians.” The laity’s holiness, he says, lies in showing forth love of God and fellow men in the family, economic, civic, and political areas of life, and this is not an "inferior” or "second-class Christian state." It is simply a different vocation. Ga. relegated the laity to an in ferior role, he believes, has wreaked great harm by causing the laity to suppose that they were not called to complete de dication to the service of God; that they need only to be "sun- day Christians.” On the cont rary, he said, the laity should be every bit as dedicated as the priest, Sister, or Brother. FATHER Gerken said he wrote his book partly to refute the idea that the lay state is spiritually inferior, and to offer at least a tentative positive theology for lay life. In the introduction he wrote that his book "seeks to be only a step toward what will one day be complete theology of the layman.” Priesthood Is Christ LISTED 6TOCKS PRIMARY MARKETS IN APPROXIMATELY 100 UNLISTED STOCKS CORPORATE BONDS — UNDERWRITINGS TAX-FREE MUNICIPAL BONDS PORTFOLIO ANALYSIS J. They do have to attend parocial group meetings, and they do minister to their own people. What is very often forgotten is that priests are human beings. Physically and mentally they are no better and no worse in these regards than anyone else. Yet, one must confess that we often look upon them as supermen. To be sure, there are a few; just as there are in oth er walks of life. But they do need all the breaks and recreation that the rest of us need to keep our health and sanity. There are abuses. Not every priest lives an austere life; not every priest has a simple room or a simple home; but the fact remains that most of them do. Hence, in our attempt to eval uate the priesthood in relation to ourselves, let us always understand that most of them are in reality as we expect them to be in their high calling.
